Dispatches: The Problem Princes

Prince Harry and Prince William For readers in the UK, there’s a new documentary airing tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Dispatches: The Problem Princes in which the slightly leftwing reporter and newscaster Alex Thomson examines “what the future holds for Prince William, and how the activities of the Princes are shaping the modern Monarchy that he will one day inherit”.

It also promises a look at their love lives, finances and their military training. As a bonus, it asks what lessons uncles Andrew and Edward can offer.

They seem to have spent some money on it and done a good dig around. No doubt the usual C4 coolness to the Royal Family will figure in the show, but Thomson may just winkle out new information on the Kate Middleton cloak of invisibility.

For all our North American friends, this is sure to make it onto YouTube. In any case, I’ll report back on it tomorrow.

Update: In the end the show was just another C4 trashfest dominated by republican talking heads who have never had a good word for the Monarchy in their lives. Total biased rubbish. Channel 4 should have its public-service remit withdrawn.

Prince Andrew shoots from the hip on Iraq

It’s very hard to justify a Royal Family member criticizing a close ally’s foreign policy at any time. But when that country is the U.S. and he is about to travel the Southern states on a trade mission promoting British exports, it looks a lot like carelessness.

Prince Andrew
The Duke of York — Britain’s Special Trade Ambassador

The Duke of York will be meeting Southern business leaders who are mostly Republican politically and overwhelmingly support the policies of President Bush.

In an interview with the Herald Tribune newspaper, Andrew’s point was that the White House should have listened and learned more from Britain’s experiences of Empire and of similar insurgencies around the world.

He believes that the consequences of the Iraq war have led to a “healthy scepticism” toward Washington and a feeling of “why didn’t anyone listen to what was said and the advice that was given?”.

He reaffirmed that the U.S. is Britain’s number one ally but thought there were “occasions when people in the UK would wish that those in responsible positions in the U.S. might listen and learn from our experiences”.

The Duke claimed said that because of its imperial history, Britain had experienced much of what the U.S. is currently going through on the world stage.

“If you are looking at colonialism, if you are looking at operations on an international scale, if you are looking at understanding each other’s culture, understanding how to operate in a military insurgency campaign, we have been through them all,” he said.

“We’ve won some, lost some, drawn some. The fact is there is quite a lot of experience over here which is valid and should be listened to.”

This begs the question of how much experience of Empire is to be found among members of the current Labour Government, an anti-colonial, anti-military party, which refuses properly to equip our forces while sending them to fight two foreign wars without sound military objectives. Americans might rightly say, “physician heal thyself”.

Naturally, this has drawn a torrent of criticism from Republican institutes, like the Heritage Foundation, as well as from a wide spectrum of opinion. Andrew may have been fortunate that his comments were publicized on Super Tuesday, which has to some extent drowned them out. Imagine the effect on a slow news day.

Airmiles Andy seems to have morphed into Shot-Foot Andy.

Candle in the wind for New Age Fergie

A scented candle in her bathroom may have provided the Duchess of York with a little aromatherapy, but it also landed her with a £20,000 ($40,000) bill after nearly burning down her new home, Dolphin House.

Fergie had left the house yesterday for a business appointment when her housekeeper found smoke billowing from the bathroom.

Ten firefighters arrived on the scene and put the flames out, but not before considerable damage had been done by fire and smoke. Neither of the Duchess’s children, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, were thought to be at home at the time.

A fire brigade officer said, “The Duchess may not feel that lucky right now but this fire could have been very much worse. If the housekeeper had not been there to react so quickly, it could have destroyed much more than a bathroom suite.”

Fergie moved into the house last year following the sale of Sunninghill Park. It is less than a mile from her former husband Prince Andrew’s home at Royal Lodge, Windsor.

So will Fergie be lodging with Andrew again, albeit temporarily? Only if she leaves the candles behind, I would imagine.

The York family Christmas card 2007

Prince Andrew has decided on a very homely Christmas card this year which includes all members of his less than nuclear family.

But where, you might ask, is Mum? Actually, the Duchess took the photo, so modestly remains hidden. Hey, there is a ten second timer on most cameras these days!

And as if one pic was not enough, there’s another on the back.

And still no Fergie. I never knew she was so shy and retiring.
