  1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, John!

  2. Thanks you, John! A very Merry and Blessed Christmas to you and to all of our dear Royal Anecdotes Clan and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

  3. Oh good grief! I meant to type “Thank you, John!” My typos will be the end of us all! :)

  4. Thank you. I want to wish all of you a Happy and Blessed Christmas and New Year as well. I just started coming around here, but already I feel like one of the gang.

  5. Happy Holidays to all here at RA!

  6. Welcome to RA, Jacque! It’s always fun to have new voices joining our conversations!

As I wrote on the previous thread, Minnesota is expecting the first major Christmas snowstorm in 30 years. In my area of the state, the forecast is for 17-22 inches of snow, along with wind, beginning Wednesday evening and continuing through Friday night. Our family lives in the country, so we’ll be praying that the electricity doesn’t go out, which would leave us a bit chilly.

God’s blessings to you all! Merry Christmas!

  7. May God grant Minnesota all the people need for a good Christmas during your expected storm Evelyn. It’s hot is Aussie but we are expecting a fabulous Christmas gift from God… RAIN in our most dry areas and where the poor farmers are struggling at the moment.

A blessed Christmas and new year to all!

  8. Merry Christmas – and here’s to a fantastic 2010!

  9. Many Ho Ho Ho’s to all RAers — and HoHo’s too, for all who like them!

  10. Courage, Evelyn! I’ve escaped that part of the country for the time being, but I’ll be looking out for you as the next “storm of the century” approaches.

I was without electricity for three days two winters ago and my house was 43 degrees F before it ended. To be honest, I enjoyed the huddle for warmth and the absence of TV.

Though I wish you no inconvenience, I think Christmas is better with candles anyway.

  11. My Grandparents used to tell me about Christmas by candlelight and describe for me the simple, homespun pleasures of their childhoods during the 1870’s and 1880’s. In those days, lighted candles were attached to the branches of the live Christmas tree and a bucket of water was placed next to the tree in case disaster struck. There were also lighted candles in the windows and since most homes were heated by fires in the fireplaces in the rural community where they lived, the light from the flames gave off light as well. The tree ornaments were made of cloth, yarn, apples and dyed nuts, strings of berries and popcorn. By our standards it wasn’t very comfortable, but it was certainly quaint. Keep safe and warm, Evelyn! We’ll be thinking about you!

  12. Be safe Evelyn, and thank you for the wonderful welcome! Cristina, may your Christmas be blessed with the rain that your farmers so desperately need. Gigi, those were the days, weren’t they? I used to hear about the real candles on the Christmas tree, too, and how they would all get around the piano and sing Christmas songs together. It’s sad that families don’t do that anymore. We still get together, but mostly to see the little ones open up presents. Every year from the first day of December, probably up to the middle of February, my apartment is filled with Christmas music. It’s such a blessed season, and again I hope that all of you get everything that you wish for. As Tiny Tim so eloquently (spelling?) put it, “God Bless us everyone!”

  13. Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. We lived through the “Great Ice Storm-Blizzard” of 1997 in NW MN, when we were mostly without power for 4 days. (Our town had an old power plant that they were able to get working, giving sections of town about an hour of power every 6 hours.) The coming storm is being compared to the “Halloween Blizzard” of 1991, which was epic; we lived in Omaha that winter, where we had inches of ice. South Dakota has already declared an emergency, in advance of the storm.

As to what I’d wish for Christmas… world peace, political bipartisanship, and a royal engagement would be nice. My husband gave me a beautiful necklace for my 50th birthday last week, which was the big gift surprise. I am hoping that the gifts from our parents arrive today, because I don’t expect mail delivery on Christmas Eve with this storm.

If the internet holds, I’ll be checking in during the storm. It would be great if some of the Royal girl/boyfriends were able to join the Royals at Sandringham on Boxing Day.

  14. That sounds ghastly, Evelyn. I do hope you all remain safe over the holidays.

If it gets bad, think of Prince William who slept out in the street this week with the homeless in -4C — around 26F by my calculation.

I’m guessing some of that weather will find its way across the Atlantic to us soon. The Met Office is forecasting a mild winter, would you believe. If I had to bet, I’d bet against them.

  15. It is on the mild side here in Texas today, but we expect quite a rainstorm tonight and tomorrow the temps are forecast to drop to the 40-50F range with a lower dip to the 30’s for Christmas Day. Seasonal for Christmas! Our son arrived safely from DC and our daughter is here, so our family circle is complete! I’ll be cooking all day tomorrow, preparin+g for our Christmas Eve dinner, after which we’ll attend Midnight Mass. Christmas Day I’ll cook and serve Christmas Brunch and Christmas Dinner. All these traditions are so important to us that it is a joy to recreate them every year. Nevertheless, nothing can eclipse for us the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Our Savior, the matchless gift God in His infinite mercy gave to mankind. May we ever strive to share God’s love with all the world, and recognize the face of Christ in each person we encounter, and treat them with love and justice. Blessings to all!

  16. Beautifully said, Gigi, and, from a slightly different perspective, I agree. :)

  17. Hello all! Hope you’re having a most wonder Christmas Eve and Christmas!

I agree with John, “Beautifully said, Gigi.”

Evelyn, I also live in Minnesota and have sinde 1979. Both of those snow storms were pretty wild! I remember taking my daughters out trick or treating before it got too deep in 1991…we only went 3 blocks and barely made it home. Then I had to go out to help my husband drive the last few blocks home as he came home from work he got stuck about every couple blocks and he was so tired that he could not shovel or push anymore. A friend came to watch the kids and I walked down to meet him. The storm in 97 was crazy too but did not affect me as much…although my car did get hit by a driver as I was trying to pull out of my driveway. (He hit ice.)

So, I sit here as the snow falls right now…about 9 inches so far and it’s only supposed to get worse. I’m praying for clear roads so I can go to Christmas church service.

So, Peace to all and a very blessed Christmas!

  18. Goodness…that would be since…not sinde :(

  19. Thank you Jaque for your prayer to our farmers.

Reports here are saying your storm is like no other on record Evelyn. Do keep us up-dated (if you can) as to your safety. We shall keep praying for your safety.

Dan is right, candles are the go for Christmas. I went to church last night and part of the service was by candle light only and it was sensational. We sang hymns and held our candles up and praised God for his gift to us, The Lord Jesus.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

  20. Have a read of “Prince William visit sparks royal crisis” by Richard Palmer, royal correspondent for express.co.uk. This article is more in tune with what is reported over this side of the world.

Williams sleep over in the streets of London is impressive and I want to state that I don’t personally feel that a wish for a republic is necessarily a judgement on the royals themselves (as individuals) but rather a sense of growth and need for independence by our countries. Like a child growing up and leaving its parent. I hope the British understand that.

    How are you going Evelyn?

  21. I’m doing fine, Cristina– thanks for asking. So far the worst of the storm has been east of us, but the wind picked up this afternoon, and it’s snowing again. We hear that the second wave coming tonight will be much worse than the first. When the two low pressure cells join up, that will be the very worst– not adding but multiplying the effect of the storm.

All our church services have been cancelled because of the storm, so we’re enjoying more family time with our sons. My youngest son and I made Christmas cookies this afternoon. My husband made Finnish Oven-Baked Pancake for supper (tradition from my family). We’ve shared Christmas devotions, opened all our gifts, and my husband is assembling a gift for one of our sons.

Off to make homemade cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast (a blizzard tradition), and start thawing the salmon for Christmas Dinner.

It doesn’t sound like there will be any interesting Royal family news tomorrow, other than the fashion report on the way to church. :(

  22. Here in the city our streets are likely more passable than in rural MN so we were able to make our church service this evening. I do love Christmas services.

Speaking of candles…I have a memory of one Christmas in Switzerland, 1977. We were there for the holiday and to ski. We were invited by the inn keeper to have cookies and treats Christmas eve. They had a real tree and lit real candles. It was beautiful but I also remember my mother was like a cat near a rocking chair all night waiting for one of the candles to catch the tree on fire. But it was a wonderful memory from my childhood.

As for royal news, if the fashion report is all there is…I’ll take it :)

    Again, Merry Christmas, everyone!

  23. Getty has a bunch of photos of the Royal Family on their way to Christmas worship. I liked Autumn’s coat and Zara’s and Beatrice’s whole ensembles, and Sophie’s headpiece (not really a hat). The fields are still white for their Christmas. Will they still go hunting?

It’s still snowing here in western Minnesota, and scheduled to snow hard all day. But the winds aren’t too bad where we are.

  24. It’s good to know that all’s well where Evelyn is. Here in NSW, Australia the rain continues and it is a very welcome Christmas present to our farmers, rivers and water supplies. No floods as yet. The rain has been excellent! We are blessed.

  25. I am so pleased that you have gotten the desperately needed rain, Christina! We here in Central Texas suffered profound, damaging drought and high heat this last summer, so I well know what a blessing it is to see rain falling on parched soil.

Evelyn, we are relieved and grateful that you are persevering in spite of the elements! We hope you continue to stay warm and safe as wintry winds blow and snow falls like powdered sugar!

  26. Thank you, Gigi! The snow is continuing. It doesn’t look like we’ll get much more, though. I think we’ve gotten about 15 inches, not counting drifts. My husband got our driveway open this afternoon, so we’ll be off to church in the morning.

Like Cristina, we, too, are grateful for this moisture. Snow doesn’t replenish the soil the same way rain does, as more of it ends up running off into the rivers. But it is helpful to cover the soil so it doesn’t blow away in the winter winds. Gigi, I’ll be praying that Central Texas will receive needed rain this winter.

  27. The sun has been out and the snow is just about gone here. Unfortunately the driving icy rain we had on Christmas Day caused the creeks to rise – you can still see the high waters as you drive by. Hopefully we’ll not get rain again for at least a week.

The Guardian has a great introspective piece on the future of the monarchy and how William is prepping for his role with his trip to Australia : http://tinyurl.com/yexfen7

(I found the reference to Gordon Brown amusing!)

  28. Yes, that’s a favourable piece from the leftwing Observer. William’s team will be pleased with that.

Spot on too about the “republicanism” of Australia … and Gordon Brown. :)

    Thanks for the link NCKat.

  29. I’m a little late to say Merry Christmas but I do wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Gigi or John get the Champagne ready.

P.S. I havn’t been around much as John hasn’t done much posting are you going to do regular postings again?

  30. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too, Trudie! In very short order I shall be selecting the champagne for chilling, never fear! As for our own John, he has been a whirling dervish, writing and publishing his book and, no doubt, has been diverted by many lovely Christmas festivities. I fear we are all a little melancholy while the Labor Government continues to batter Britain, but as soon as the Tories prevail and Cameron attends upon the Queen to kiss hands, I foresee a true rally! We shall all gather together on Thursday, December 31st, for our Royal Anecdotes Gala New Year’s Eve Tea, I have no doubt!

  31. I hope so, Trudie: 2009 has been a very busy year, starting two businesses and writing a book. However, there were William’s decision to join the RAF, Harry’s to stay in the Army, and the Queen’s that the Royal Family should keep a low profile during the recession.

The only events to write about have featured female fashion. As you will know, I can’t tell the difference between a fastener and a fascinator. Also, any news on Kate soon proved false, and Chelsy really, really doesn’t want to be a Princess. It’s been a very quiet year all round.

A very happy New Year to you, Trudie, and I’m sure Gigi will conjure up her usual feast to celebrate the occasion. :)

  32. looking forward to gigi’s feast….happy new year to all!

  33. I’ll be there What kind of book are you writing John sounds interesting. Anyone interested in some New Years eve Egg nog?

  34. *Hic*
    Silly question!

  35. Oh, dear. If Dan is already six sheets to the wind, how can he possibly preside at the sideboard and pour the stronger libations at tomorrow’s Royal Anecdotes Gala Happy New Year’s Eve Tea? Someone please get some hot coffee into Dan before tea time if possible. He has a large quantity of champagne to pour into my Great Grandmother’s French crystal goblets!

  36. Down Under it is nearly 6pm, soon the year will end for us…

A blessed new year to all and I thank and praise God that we got some much needed rain and that you are all safe despite the severe storms.

Keep an eye out for our fireworks here in Sydney, they are promising us the best ever! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

  37. Happy New Year, Cristina. Nine and a half hours to go here in England. Weather? The opposite of what you’ve got. :)

  38. Trudie, it’s already published and you can see it at the top of the RA sidebar. ;)

  39. It took me longer to get to the computer this morning, so I apologize for being late! Dear Royal Anecdote friends, we are celebrating the New Year in all our lives, which will begin at midnight, in whatever time zone we reside! That calls for one of our festive teas, of course. Dear Trudie, if you will pour and if our dear Coni will pass tea sandwiches, I will serve the Balmoral Dundee Cake, without which our dear John cannot welcome the New Year! We have also marzipan, iced tea cakes, double chocolate lace cakes and miniature cream puffs filled with merinque. Our own Dan will preside at the sideboard, where champagne and other stronger libations are offered. My dear Royal Anecdote friends, please come to the tea table, our Royal Anecdotes Gala Happy New Year Tea is served! I am sure we may rely on our own John to favor us with a New Year’s Eve toast!

  40. Happy new year everyone, and thank you for the lovely tea, Gigi. I’ll stay near the sideboard, to keep an eye on Dan!

  41. Gigi I am already pouring a feast especially if we can prop Dan up LOL. Happy New Year everyone.

  42. Thank you, Leslie and thank you, Trudie! Happy New Year and many blessings to all!

  43. Maybe I should stick to tea only… I am, after all, recovering from our new year party last night. They weren’t kidding when they said that our fireworks were the best ever!

It’s 1pm here, in Sydney, on the first day of 2010.

    Happy New Year everyone.

  44. Cristina, I saw a short video of the Sydney fireworks on CNN.com, and they did look wonderful– though I’m sure they were best viewed in person, and not in a small box on my computer screen. I hope you are feeling better by now!

Thanks for the wonderful tea, Gigi! Happy New Year to everyone!

  45. Thank you Evelyn but the truth be known, I have never been drunk in my life! I am however tired from lack of sleep…we’ll keep this quiet however, one doesn’t want to be seen as “boring”.

    Yawn, 8.38pm…time for bed!

  46. Happy New Year, everyone!

For all those who are speculating that William will become king instead of Charles, royal spokesmen are saying that there are no such plans and that William intends to focus on his military career:

    http://tinyurl.com/yasldhx

There are no plans for an engagement, and there is even a hint that he may serve in Afghanistan.

  47. It sounds like this article in the Telegraph is a scoop for the paper, and well-sourced.

  48. :( If they deploy Prince William to a forward area in Afghanistan, my central nervous system will collapse! Some of us barely lived through Prince Harry’s deployment, must we go through this again? Someone in the top echelons of the DOD must put his foot down and disallow any such deployment for Prince William. Enough is quite enough! To even contemplate a deployment to Afghanistan for the Prince issheer folly.

  49. If William does serve in Afghanistan, I’m sure 1) it will be under the radar and 2) well away from the front lines, unlike Harry. I have every faith that things will work out. I know that William will need to step up, but from what the Telegraph is saying, William will do what he wants no matter what agenda the public has for him.

As was so pointedly said, he does not want to overshadow Charles which is as it should be. Charles should have his chance at the job he has spent his entire life preparing for.

  50. I also wish to state that Charles is not my favorite Royal, and I detest Camilla. However to be fair to the man, he is only human and has been in an untenable position for years vis-a-vis his job. No wonder he’s so eager to prove his mettle and he does deserve the chance.

  51. I haven’t seen anything in the Times, which makes me wonder if the Telegraph’s article is credible. I also believe that it will be virtually impossible to station anyone, let alone the high profile Prince, in an “under the radar” position in Afghanistan, because that country is so war-torn that safe spots do not exist. Let us hope that the DoD has well considered these circumstances prior to making the decision to deploy. As I said at the time Prince Harry’s deployment to a forward area was being considered, there will be Hell to pay if anything happens to Prince William. The reason that persons in direct line to the Throne are not deployed in forward areas is to secure the line of succession. Such reasoning is sound and this policy should be continued, in my view.

  52. I have no answer for that, Gigi other than I regard the Telegraph as being more reliable than the Daily Mail or the Sun. I did search the Times’ site but the closest I found was a reference to William as “The People’s Prince,” which echos some of the themes in the piece in the Telegraph. I doubt the Times would publish details of the Princes’ military assignments.

I have to say I had to laugh at a lurid tabloid headline I saw at my local grocer’s over the hols – that the Queen was on her deathbed and that William was taking over straight away.

  53. That gives me a chuckle, also, NCKat. If the Queen is on her deathbed, I am already in the grave! I fully expect Queen Elizabeth II to live as long as her incredible mother, who lived to be 101 years of age. I also believe that it would take a horrific event, such as Charles’ premature death, to keep him from being the next monarch. We have, I believe, barring disaster, nearly twenty more years of the august reign of Queen Elizabeth II, after which Charles will be crowned King. During his Kingship, I confidently expect Prince William (who will then be Prince of Wales) and Prince Harry, (who, if married, will be the Duke of something) to render strong support to their father during his reign, as long as one or both of our Golden Princes have not been sacrificed by the DoD on the altar of misplaced priorities.

  54. Andrew Alderson is a good reporter with excellent links to the Royal machine. He does say that William will remain with the military until at least 2013. Since we will probably be on our way out of Afghanistan by then, it’s unlikely that William will go there, especially as he will be a Search & Rescue Sea King pilot.

Although there are rumours that an imminent engagement to Kate is in the offing, I’ll believe it when I hear it.

  55. For this relief, much thanks, John! I am breathing easier! Just the thought of either of our Golden Princes being in Afghanistan fills me with dread and dark forbodings of utter disaster!

  56. What an interesting article, thanks NCKat. I agree with John on the engagement issue and the article also dismisses it.

I wonder if she will do anything (career wise) this year?

  57. Cristina,

She needs to do something – she’s a bit old to be languishing for her prince and in this day and age, it’s not wise. I honestly wouldn’t blame her if she decided not to wait for him and struck out on her own.

But then I guess all you have to do is look at Camilla – now there’s a fine example to follow. Sorry if this offends anyone but I find her a liability to the royals rather than an asset. If only she embraced her role with more enthusiasm and a willingness to work as hard as her husband or in-laws, I’d be more sympathetic towards her.

  58. I see the parallels NCKat.

My mother is a Diana lover and absolutely hates Camilla (and Charles). I understand that once upon a time there was a love triangle and then a square…Diana made it square, Kanga was there before her. It seems that Camilla got her man because she kept quiet and available, no work. This however was not unusual in my mother’s generation and therefore more acceptable but now? Camilla is old(er) and I venture to say that because she has not been accustomed to working it explains why the current workload is rather unbearable.

I’d love to see Kate kick PW’s butt but the more she waits the more I want HIM to kick hers!!!!

  59. What I find odd is that Charles, who surely must know Camilla better than anyone, did not preceive the lazy side of her nature, which has been recognized and commented upon by her friends and family. Did Charles think she would change after marriage? At Camilla’s age, that is quite an unlikely prospect. Further, I find it odd that Charles did not perceive the difficulties that would follow from Camilla’s disinterest in the work of the Royal Family and the discipline and schedule required to achieve the desired results. At this point in time, eyebrows are raised in rarified circles and there are rumors of blazing rows between Charles and Camilla over just this subject. What will happen if Camilla does not energize and do her full duty when Charles becomes King and she is his Consort? I foresee serious problems if she does not mend her ways. The daily duties of the Queen Consort are many and varied and at this time, I cannot see Camilla performing these duties to even the lowest standard. Even on the sunniest day, this dilemma breeds distant thunder.

  60. Charles may have thought that Camilla’s lack of outside interests before their marriage was her being kind to him by being available for him whenever he needed her. :(

I know that it could look like Kate is doing the same with Prince William, but I trust that theirs is a more mutual relationship, in which they discuss each others’ schedules as they make plans– both for when they can be together, and when they have other responsibilities and interests. If one of them must follow or give way to the other, then I would expect– as future King– that Prince William’s schedule would take precedent. I don’t think it would be wise for Kate to place her needs above William’s– side-by-side, yes, but not above.

I say that not out of a “traditionalist’ view of marriage, but out of a realistic view of the role Kate will marry into if, indeed, they marry (which I hope they do).

  61. gigi is spot on as usual..at this point in camilla’s life she seems to just want to enjoy her grandchildren and not take on many royal duties…wonder if charles will have her “step it up” when he becomes king…

is kate still working for party pieces? she’s in a hard spot as far as a career, she cant be seen to take advantage of her royal connections and land a great gig (flex hrs/privacy) on the other hand if she had a regular career like the rest of us she would have photographers running after her….

thank again to gigi for pulling out all the stops for that fabu do – am just recovering… :)

  62. Speaking of celebrations… could we have a small party for Kate’s birthday on Saturday? Is this 28? Perhaps a more traditional birthday party with cake, in keeping with her family’s business.

  63. Evelyn, I think that’s a lovely idea. I have a small cake making business (a hobby that sort of blossomed, but it’s only a part-time thing) that specializes in birthday cakes, so I would be happy to take charge of creating a cake for our Kate!

  64. Sounds wonderful, Leslie– thank you! RAers have so many delicious talents! I’ll think about what I might contribute. Ice cream?

  65. The Telegraph has an interesting piece, “Why restless subjects want Prince William to be a shadow king.” I’d be interested in your opinions on the topic.

  66. I spotted that Evelyn, it is interesting isn’t it? I think it is spot on.

There is also a story running around about Harry at a fundraiser moaning about the Australian media having “outed” him in Afghanistan. The articles are saying that Australians may retaliate when his brother is here…

Let me just go on record to say that I believe that any intelligent Australian would side with Harry regarding his criticism of New Idea Magazine (oh, why, why is this publication still circulating?Yeah, I know, the readers have NO IDEA!). Had he criticized Australians in general, it would certainly be another matter…

I think it more likely a plot by the British media to blame Harry should his brother not be as well received as they hope. It really irks me to suspect this. I don’t understand why he keeps being referred to as dumb. Granted he wears his heart on his sleeve and he may be not very academic but that does not render anyone dumb! He is articulate in his speeches, indeed, more so than his brother and he does not give up! He has an Aussie spirit that man, he would do well here. A bit of a larrikin, that is all…

A few more butt kicks from his HOT girlfriend and he will mature into a good man, I think or at least, I hope.

  67. I think Australia would have a lot to offer Prince Harry & Chelsy (Duke & Duchess of ???). I think Chelsy would enjoy the climate there. Can you foresee any role that might have them living in Australia for several years?

  68. Well, Governor General is out of the question…that is unless he wants to become an Australian, and why not be one, he might be happier here. Chelsy would have no problem in working and being his wife then. They would be given a “fair go” so long as there were no “airs” and expectations of being treated any different from the rest of the population and that may be exactly what they are looking for.

Yep, problem solved Evelyn, all they have to do is become Aussies!

  69. Yes, that might actually be a help to them personally and as a couple. I assume that actually being Aussies wouldn’t interfere with Prince Harry in line for the throne? Could they still be “Duke & Duchess” of something if they were Australians?

  70. I think only William would be considered as Governor-General of Oz because it would be good training for his future role as King. Harry is an action man and would hate all the paperwork and meetings on political subjects.

Chelsy does not want to be a Princess on any pretext and I doubt she would want to interrupt her career in London for all that razamataz.

As for airs and graces, my experience of Australians is that there are as many “snobs” there as there are here. :)

  71. I believe that Prince William would be splendid as Governor General of Australia and I further feel that he would derive a great benefit from his experience there. I agree with John regarding Prince Harry and Chelsy. It will be interesting to see if such an appointment is truly being contemplated for Prince William, as I cannot at this time recall an instance when a Royal as close to the Throne as Prince William was sent to an off-island location for an extended assignment. Since he is in the direct line to the Throne, I would be very surprised if this takes place. As for “snobs” and the places where they are most in evidence, John is accurate in his remarks. I feel certain that people who look down their noses at others, besides being very insecure and immature, are found in every country on the earth, including the United States of America. However I can only speak with authority of America, as I have never traveled outside my native land except for a trip to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls when I was four years old. :) I did not detect any snobbery in Canada during that trip, but I was so very delighted with the beautiful horses of the Mounties at the border that I devoted very little time to studying the humans. :)

  72. Gigi, it was decided a long time ago that William would not be Gov-Gen of Australia. Now he’s decided on a military career as far as the eye can see.

Prince Charles was once considered for that role too, and even spent a term in an Australian school, but the political role never materialized.

  73. I have no problem with Prince William continuing his military career, especially since it has been proven to be excellent training for Kingship, as long as he is not assigned to a forward area in a war zone. It is a miracle that Prince Harry survived his time in a forward area and I do not think it is prudent for us to expect another miracle in this regard. I shall pray for a miracle in the eventuality, but I do not think we can confidently expect to be gifted with another miracle. I hope the upper echelon of the DoD think well and carefully about this, flooded by the bright light of realism, before making an irrevocable decision I fear we may all live to regret.

  74. Plans for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee have been announced. Who’s the minister in charge? Everyone’s favorite…. Lord Mandelson!

    Check it out at http://tinyurl.com/y975vjz

  75. Lord Mandelson is “Everybody’s favorite…”? Is he so? When did that poll take place, as I fear I missed it. At this point, when I I am in a ferocious fit of pique with the Labor Government, the Archangel Gabriel could be a Labor Minister and I should find myself unable to endorse even that exalted and archangelic saint as my favorite! That said, I am very excited about and greatly looking forward to every event of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! What a wonderful tribute for the Queen and the entire Royal Family! Rule Britannia!

  76. Of course there are snobs in Australia, people! What I meant is that those who are not are much better received (surprise, surprise!). If you are royal and British at that, better you are no snob at all…

If Chelsy does not wish to be a princess she must be either wasting her time with Harry or they must have come so some understanding regarding him ditching his title, I assume.

  77. That is an interesting point you make, Christina, regarding Chelsy perhaps persuading Prince Harry to ditch his title so that she doesn’t have to cope with being a Princess. Financially, I suppose it is feasible. Chelsy is an heiress and Prince Harry has his inheritance from Princess Diana, which would be all he has to live on if he forsakes his Royal title, which will also mean he will no longer derive income from the Civil List. Perhaps Prince Harry longs, in his heart of hearts, to fly away with Chelsy to South Africa and be a normal person. Nevertheless, I do not think he will do that. For one thing, Princess Diana’s death was a tragedy that caused Prince William and Prince Harry to bond even more tightly than they were heretofore. I believe that they are devoted to each other and since there are no other siblings and their Mother is in Heaven, after Charles dies, it is Prince William and Prince Harry who must pick up the fallen banner and carry on. Prince William shall be King and he will need the full support of his Royal brother. I don’t believe for all the world that Prince Harry will let his brother down. Of course, I could be wrong. Chelsy Davy would not be the first clever woman to come between two brothers, nor would she be the first to separate a man from his duty. However neither is Chelsy the only woman in Prince Harry’s life. The memory of his beloved Mother is strongly preserved in the mind and heart of the Prince and in the end, I hope and believe that Princess Diana’s influence will prevail.

  78. A New Year’s present to all of us who are fans of Prince William and Prince Harry – the National Portrait Gallery has unveiled a portrait of William and Harry together and it’s fabulous:

    http://tinyurl.com/yb9njn4

  79. Egad, I was joking about Mandelson being a favorite of anyone save (maybe!) his mother.

Nice portrait of The Boys, although the state of portrait painting in general today does not meet past standards.

  80. I saw it online this morning. The artist does not quite capture the facial features of the Princes, I do not think, but it is a pleasing portrait nonetheless.

  81. I agree with you Gigi. The portrait is wonderful.

  82. I agree with you, Dan. I long for the days of portraiture performed to the splendid standard of an artist like Winterhalter, who did so many definitive portraits of Queen Victoria and many other European Royals.

  83. Now that we have photographs to capture how a person really looks, I don’t think total realism is so essential in portraiture when done in paintings. The portrait looks to me a mixture of realism and impressionism but I think it captures beautifully the relationship between the two brothers. They can be so relaxed and at ease with each other in public, which is something you don’t see with the older generation of the Royal Family.

  84. lets all plan to take london by storm for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! we can all take our turn looking out for dan in the pubs :)

  85. Excellent notion, Coni! Our own John can guide us through London. :) Are there Starbucks in London? We must find places to procure hot coffee for Dan if necessary. Of course we can always take a thermos along with us, but we must guard against Dan spiking the coffee with brandy!

  86. LOL Gigi! Yes, there are Starbucks shops all over London so we wouldn’t have to take a flask of hot coffee for Dan. Unfortunately we couldn’t take the flask with us on the plane, lest we be seen as potential terrorists. Actually a drunk Dan might be difficult to smuggle on board.

  87. Hmmmm….I see your point, NCKat. Let us all give this matter some thought about how to get Dan to London in a state of general sobriety. He may need to take a cruise ship to the UK, if all else fails. :)

  88. *Hic*

Alas, I think the glamour is gone from international air travel, while every hour is Happy Hour on the Queen Mary II!

I say we meet at the pier in late May 2012, and set sail in time for Jubilee Weekend, June 2-5.

  89. Regarding portraiture, particularly of nobility, realism was rarely the objective. The artist’s job was to smooth over the rough spots, as it were. ;) I agree that photography has all but killed off the painted portrait, or at least driven the most talented painters away from it. With apologies to Lucien Freud, I don’t think his recent portrait of the Queen added much to her iconography.

As for the new one of the Princes, I hate to nitpick a painting I haven’t seen in person, but Harry’s posture seems awkward and Williams’ eyes aren’t quite right.

  90. I agree with your assessment of the Queen’s recent portraits (truly dreadful) and the double portrait of the young Princes. These works, while pleasant, are not fully professional, skilled renderings of their subjects. Further, the pose chosen by the artist is not a attractive, nor is it appropriate for a Royal portrait. Royal Princes do not slump or slouch for formal portraits. Superb posture is part and parcel of Royal bearing. Casual attitudes are acceptable if captured in photographs, but they are not appropriate for a portrait in oils. If the young Princes did not know this, the artist certainly should have been aware and posed the subjects accordingly.

  91. Well, presumably the Princes had the final approval of the portrait and I can see them preferring the relaxed style. The time for more formal portraits will come later, I think.

I think we have to remember that these two are still young and impetuous in many ways – I also think it’s a sign of the times and how they view themselves. There is so little formality amongst younger people (which frankly I find refreshing).

I can hear you saying, Gigi, “Yes but …” But we are not them and we don’t know the criteria they used to pick the artist or the pose. The artist nowadays snaps many photos of different poses and then works with the subject to pick the one they like the best and paint with that pose.

  92. According to the article, this portrait was painted from life, i.e. the Princes posed for several hours during five sessions. I don’t know who paid the 11,000 pounds sterling for the portrait, but someone needed to have posed it professionally. Just my opinion, of course, but this rendering will look out of place hanging in the Royal Portrait Gallery at Windsor.

  93. Well, you do know what they say, don’t you? Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, which extends to appreciation of art.

I have been to both the National Portrait Gallery and can venture to say that I think this will fit in fine. Hey, be thankful they didn’t go for an abstract artist. I shudder to think how Picasso would have done. Now Hockley, he might not have been too bad.

  94. Sorry I didn’t mean to say “both”. Please disregard!

  95. I like the relaxed poses, but I confess I find William to be off. Is he in mid sentence? And what is happening with his face?

As Dan says, hard to judge when not looking at it in person.

  96. Are we ready for tomorrow’s party?

I wonder what the media will have for Kate’s 28th birthday tomorrow….

  97. Evelyn, we’ve got the coldest winter for many decades here. I would imagine Kate is holed up in her Berkshire house unable to get out for snow and ice.

Here in Exeter, the river was totally frozen overnight with the swans frozen into it. People were out today trying to dig them out. I’ve never known such weather in the West Country. The whole of the UK is in deep freeze now and it looks like continuing for weeks.

As this happens so infrequently, the services are just not prepared for it. Most of us are hibernating like bears. So much for global warming.

I’ll put up a Royal Roundup over the weekend with what news I can gather. There’s just not much going on. If Chelsy has any sense, she’ll be in Cape Town. At least she can enjoy the cricket. :)

  98. Much of the US is in the same situation. Wind chills of up to 30 below zero, and that’s fahrenheit!

A nip of brandy, anyone? ;)

  99. Dan, -30F? Are you sure about that? It’s close to absolute zero. :-)

  100. That’s the wind chill factor, which is what it feels like due to the high winds. Interstate 80, which is the main highway across the country, is a big sheet of ice where I am, with dozens of cars off the road. We’re expecting an actual temperature of -7 tonight.

This winter has had a cold and blustery start. It had better be sunny and 50 in February!

  101. But I should add that we’re used to winters like this where I am. Imagine Olde Englande, its swans frozen stiff!

    Courage, John!

  102. Since the weather is supposedly the main topic of conversation in Britain, I can tell you, Dan, we are talking ourselves hoarse right now. :)

  103. Dan, it’s -8 at our house right now. The wind chills here this morning were -45. Our sons came home from school early Wednesday because of snowfall. They stayed home Thursday because of blowing & drifting snow (40+mph winds). They stayed home today because of the cold temperatures.

Two of our three cars won’t start, and the snowblower is jammed up from an ice chunk. A neighbor with a tractor plowed us out this afternoon. But the forecast says we might get up to the freezing point by Sunday!

Sounds like a great weekend for a cyber party in honor of Kate’s birthday! :)

  104. Feeling mighty guilty about the outright balminess of NYC — 12 F, -11 C…

But ready to pull out all the stops for Kate@ 28 celebration! Perhaps we can schedule a tea to coincide with her very own meeting with the Queen (or is that meeting taking place only in Ricahrd Palmer’s mind?)

    See
    http://tinyurl.com/yan4bvm

  105. Doesn’t look like any of the other writers have picked up on this idea. I don’t see anything elsewhere about Kate, or Prince William, or her birthday, or anything.

It’s enough to make me start wondering if something is up somewhere….

  106. I agree with you, Evelyn. I expected to see a lot more coverage about Kate’s birthday this morning. The only thing that I have seen is about her taking tea with Her Majesty. What is going on?

  107. Dare I say nothing? I tend to think of this as non-news as this is mere speculation at this point. At any milestone or holiday the speculative press has Kate coming to tea or a dinner with the Queen.

  108. Very interesting introspective of William’s upcoming visit to NZ and the changes in press coverage between his first and second visits: http://tinyurl.com/yzyquqw

  109. Leslie, what wonderful cake have you created for us to share to celebrate Kate’s birthday? I can’t wait to taste it!

  110. According to the DM, William attended a birthday bash for Kate at her parents’ place and there was no tea with the Queen. There is also an article about Harry being promoted to the rank of Captain in the near future, which would mean he would be reassigned to a base closer to Chelsey (when she presumably returns from her world-wide excursion).

  111. Another piece about William’s upcoming visit to Australia which I find similar to the one from NZ but this one does emphasize William’s determination to forge his own path: http://tinyurl.com/ye8pfkj

  112. I found this part from the Aussie article interesting:

‘All going well, he will complete training this year and be dispatched to a search-and-rescue base for about three years.

“It’s an absolutely full-time job,” the royal aide said. “There’s no sense at the moment that he can take on much more. Prince Charles has been one heartbeat away from being king pretty much his whole life. That’s never been the case for William, he’s always been one step removed and that makes all the difference.

“It’s one reason he can afford to follow his dreams in terms of his military career in a way his father perhaps couldn’t.” ‘

  113. Insofar as I am aware, in the years of Charles’ adulthood, he has done exactly as he chose with his life path. The only “dream” Charles has ever had, which remains unaltered to this very day, is to be King and have his own way in all things. In the fullness of time, when an ever-to-be-lamented and melancholy event occcurs, I shall trust that the fulfillment of Charles’ dream will be at hand.

  114. What I found interesting is the notion that William has the freedom to go his own way to an extent that his father didn’t (or didn’t feel he had).

Perhaps because of the longevity of the lives of the Queen Mother and the Queen, and perhaps Charles himself, William has a much longer time to wait and I’m sure he wants to be as “normal” as possible for as long as he can. Frankly I’m getting a bit tired of the endless speculation of when he will announce his engagement to Kate – it will happen when it’s meant to happen.

  115. The engagement will certainly occur at a time decided by Prince William and Kate, and perhaps no one else! :) The media speculation does get tedious, undoubtedly, but we have always to remember that in the UK, the intense interest in the lives of the members of the Royal Family is a factor which sells newspapers, magazines and can guarantee the financial success of a network that broadcasts programs about the Royals. In Regency England, everything the Prince Regent said, wore, did and didn’t do was the hottest news of the day, even though he was universally detested and reviled. The senior members of the current Royal Family, especially Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, are admired, respected and beloved by the people of the Kingdom and elsewhere, and the interest in even the mundane details of their lives is very great. It may not reach the media frenzy that surrounded Princess Diana, but it is a factor.

  116. Well, well, Harry will soon be Captain and training near his girl. There are now rumors of him marrying Chelsy… Oooooh, how exiting!

Naturally, the speculation is probably all gumpf.

  117. As many of you may know, the pictures that appeared during the Holidays of KM and her family playing tennis have now been taken down from royal watching websites (and professional photography sites), thanks to the work of lawyers representing the royal family. John, have you (or anyone else) heard if this is because the photographer was trespassing, or because of the so called “ban” on private pictures of the RF?

  118. I remember seeing the photos and wondered if they shouldn’t have been taken – they were staying in an hotel on the Duchy’s estate, weren’t they?

  119. From what I read, the Middletons were staying in a home owned by the Duchy– one that is rented out normally. So no one can know whether the Middletons were renting the house, or whether the time there had been given the family as a Christmas gift from Prince Charles.

Today there were articles in the Telegraph and the Daily Mail about Prince William’s engagements in Lincolnshire today. He seems to be working hard to improve his image… perhaps to increase goodwill in advance of an engagement announcement?

  120. Sojourner, Kate and her family would not be included in a Royal ban. I expect she used Charles’s solicitor again to warn the paps off.

  121. There’s chatter on the internet about W&K possibly marrying this year so William has a Princess at his side for the jubilee celebrations beginning 6 February 2011, and also to avoid any later announcement or continued speculation stealing attention from the Queen in her 60th year on the throne.

Probably just that: chatter. But it does make sense. A wedding in late summer 2010 would stoke the public’s love of monarchy just in time for the Queen to bask in it (that is, more than she already does.)

  122. John,
Thanks for the clarification about the so called “ban.” Does this mean that you think, or hear, that the removal of the pictures is because they were taken by overzealous photographers, engaging in trespass and other malfeasance? Or that while legal, the press showed Prince Charles courtesy? Just curious. The pictures themselves were so utterly banal, I was surprised by their removal.

  123. I guess it was reported today in several papers that KM is pursuing the matter. CH appears to have clarified it did not come from anyone related to the RF.

  124. I see that William has received his wings from Charles and Camilla, and Kate was there. No snaps of Kate that I’ve seen yet; all of them have been of William.

  125. The Daily Mail and Getty have a few images. Kate wore black, or at least a black coat.

  126. It sounds like Prince William’s New Zealand trip has been a success. One report said there hasn’t been this large a contingent of British media following a royal foreign tour since Princess Diana.

  127. Yes, Evelyn. He’s doing very well. I’m sure the fact that he’s a fully trained Search & Rescue pilot give him a lot of credibility down under.

I’m going to write a piece about this later.

  128. From all the engagements that Prince William has been up to in recent months, I do think he is trying to establish himself as a working royal (if not yet full-time) in advance of an engagement announcement. While we’re all eagerly awaiting that news, I do think he is being wise about the order he’s doing these things. The Queen was very wise to give Prince William this opportunity to represent her abroad.

  129. I had no doubt that Prince William would be a great success in New Zealand, representing the Queen and the UK! I am so very pleased to see him winning such golden opinions and spreading his own brand of charm, poise and his genuine interest in everything and everybody! Well done, Prince Charles!

  130. Oh good grief, I am LOSING it! Naturally I meant to type “Well done, Prince William!” Clearly I need a cup of tea.

  131. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting a mixed reaction to William’s visit. An advance poll resulted in the following:

58% said they wanted William to take the crown (which he will, eventually!)

30 per cent indicated they would prefer Prince Charles to be the next king. I think this indicates the popularity of Charles’ visit with Diana – I think he should bring Camilla there for a visit to show her off as a viable consort but she isn’t helping matters by being a poor traveller.

56 per cent said they didn’t want Queen Elizabeth to stand down to make way for either Prince Charles or Prince William.

Personally speaking this doesn’t say anything we didn’t already know, which is that Charles is not a popular choice abroad. I must say that his visit to Canada didn’t help matters any, particularly with the missteps by Camilla.

The link to the article here:
    http://tinyurl.com/yaamwel

The Mirror doesn’t usually impress me but I have to admit that there was an insightful column today about how important William’s visit is to the monarchy and if I remember right, he does refer to Camilla’s unpopularity abroad. I wonder if she’s due for some coaching in diplomatic relations?

  132. Found the Mirror column:

    http://tinyurl.com/ycjzsma

John, how reliable is James Whitaker as a “Royal Expert”?

  133. James Whitaker is a long-term observer of the Royal Family and goes back to the Diana days. I don’t believe he would soil his reputation by writing rubbish, although all journalist bend their stories sometimes to suit their agenda. :(

  134. :( Thank you for the link, NCKat, and for your validation of James Whitaker as a “Royal Expert,” John. I have just read the article and I must say, James Whitaker certainly nailed his views to the mast with a heavy hammer. While I do not consider James Whitaker more expert nor even as expert a commentator on the British Royal Family than some other select journalists, I must admit that I can find no error in his statements nor discernible bias in his conclusions. To be fair, no one but the Queen and Prince Philip know what rationale prompted the Queen to send Prince William to represent her in New Zealand. That her reasons were fair, balanced and well-considered, I doubt not. The Queen is very wise and everything she does is for the best of all concerned. Prince William is our Golden Prince and he has done his job well and will, I trust and firmly believe, be the best person to represent the Queen anywhere on any occasion. Mr. Whitaker is correct when he says that Prince William’s most important endeavor must be to train for the day when he wears the Crown. All else must take a place behind this paramount concern. It is a pity that Charles, in his many missteps and multitudinous character failings, has placed himself in the position of becoming a thinly veiled liability to the credibility of the UK and the Royal Family. His marraige to Camilla, a woman who clearly has no intention of doing the work of the Royal Family to even a substandard level, has confirmed the dismal diagnosis which Mr. Whitaker intones. Nevertheless, Charles has done just as he chooses, and now, as the Queen shrewdly perceives, Prince William must step to the forefront and wipe clean the glass through which the people of the UK and , indeed the world, view Britain and their Monarchy. Thank God that Prince William–and his brother, Prince Harry–have the will, the character, the reputation and the personality to do this and to do it superbly.

  135. John, are you saying that Mr. Whitaker is “pro-Diana” and “anti-Camilla?” He wouldn’t be the only source I’ve read who has said that Camilla is a liability, not an asset to the RF.

I think Charles needs to push her to make more public appearances instead of spending most of her time with her family. Yes, I know she loves her grandchildren and it’s natural that she would want to spend her time with them but her number one priority should be to publicly support Charles in a bigger way. However neurotic Diana was, she certainly helped the RF in a positive way until Charles had to go and spoil it all with Camilla.

I think like most of the public, I would support Camilla more if she made more of an effort and didn’t seem so well, dare I say it, selfish and ignorant of others’ feelings. She’s probably a very nice person, really, but she needs to make an effort to do things on her own. I really don’t know how to express my visceral reactions to her in any other fashion.

To be absolutely fair, I suppose the same thing could be said of Kate, but she’s so young that if she marries William in the next few years, I think she will grow into the job as did Diana.

  136. I just read a few of the Express articles of self-styled Royal insider Richard Palmer, who also writes with a heavy hand. John, what is your own opinion of this journalist and his credibility, may I ask?

  137. William is getting plenty of press and is being well received here. Lots of mentions of his receding hair and even more mentions of how the media want him to hook up with a girl during his time off tomorrow, I suppose that would sell well…

Most of the crowd being interviewed declare their love for his mother and comment on how much like her he is. Our Premier is very exited about the media circus. She thinks this will encourage the Brits to visit $$$$

He is doing very well at promoting the monarchy, the Queen will be pleased.

  138. Cristina, thanks so much for the on-the-scene report! Since all we normally have is what we read in the newspapers and online, having a firsthand report from one of our very own in New Zealand is quite helpful! I also perceive Princess Diana in Prince William, in his handsome face, his compassionate interest in others and in his charming demeanor. I am so very delighted that New Zealanders are pleased with him and are welcoming the Prince to their beautiful country! Princess Diana is smiling down from Heaven, happy that her darling sons are doing well.

  139. John,
I was told by an acquaintance — who ever so often wanders into social circles where she meets journalists covering UK media — that many people who knew Princess Diana have, over the years, found it increasingly difficult to gain access to the Princes, let alone the RF… exaggeration, or outright misrepresentation?

  140. Sojourner, that would make sense to me if the Princes initiated such a limitation – they certainly didn’t like the way the press stirred up all that old dirt over the years. I don’t think they’d be very forgiving of those journalists.

  141. My dear Gigi, I am in Sydney, Australia and William arrived here yesterday morning so the report is really about his stay here.

I am starting to think that perhaps this visit might backfire somewhat. There is a lot of talk about his father being ditched as the future king. William will be very aware of this by now, the media and talk back radio are full of it. If his visit was not intended to overshadow his daddy, it is seriously backfiring! Perhaps he shouldn’t be so charming and like his mother, oh dear.

Let’s see how things go today…

  142. Sojourner, this was claimed by Richard Kay (Daily Mail) on a TV programme about the Princes. I believe the red tomato, James Whitaker, has also said this. Probably others too.

  143. LOL! John, why is James Whitaker called the ‘red tomato?’ Cristina, forgive me for my memory lapse–of course I recall that you are in Australia, not New Zealand. Apparently, it is not a momentous fete for Prince William to overshadow Charles in Australia, where the public memory of Princess Diana is strong and filled with tender emotion. Prince William, evidently, has done a superb job of mending fences with the Australian people. I am very pleased!

  144. Why is Mr. Whitaker a trustworthy source, if, in fact, he has seen himself “frozen out,” so to speak? (I should not have been so coy about who I was speaking about…)

  145. Gigi, Diana called Whitaker the big red tomato because his face was always very red. :-)

Sojourner, a lot of people were cut out from the Princes when the Royal Family, i.e. Charles, took full responsibility for their upbringing. It’s how they do things. There was no stigma attached.

  146. Asked in Australia when he is going to get married, William’s answer was, “I keep saying it, wait and see.”

  147. To: PW
    From: Sojourner
    Re: Wait and See comment
Dear man, I, and others like me, have perfected that skill by now. We are up to greater challenges, such as “Hear and Celebrate” or “Move on to better things.” ;-)

  148. Spot on Sojourner!

He was kissed a great deal in Melbourne. He allowed the young women in the crowd to kiss him. How committed is he?

He did very well here and seemed to be very relaxed and happy to be allowed no formalities. He seemed free. His speech in Sydney was a nervous one. I expect he was not prepared. Melbourne’s speech was much better, confident and assured. Pre-prepared no doubt. He has done a good job, we think. I see some of the British media is disgusted with his informal approach. Let me just say that if it had been otherwise he would not have been so well received. Needless to say that this was not an official visit so why the expectation that he should have been anything but informal?

Now comes the push for a new referendum…

  149. I believe that we must allow that there is a public side to Prince William and a private side. In his public life, Prince William is called upon to appeal to all types of people and to radiate warmth and charm, which includes allowing himself to be kissed by ladies and children. That does not, however, mean that he is going to marry any of those ladies nor does it suggest that he is less than committed to Kate Middleton, whom he almost surely will marry at a time of his and her choosing. I find no fault in his desire to control his own schedule and to secure his own privacy, which, I believe, is what he is doing. “Wait and see,” is, in my view, a perfectly proper response to the question he was asked. I, for one, shall wait and see! (We senior citizens have gained patience along with our years.) :D

  150. Non-debate of the day: was PW too informal?

Hmmmmmm…. well……. Wadya think he was sent to Auz instead of PC in the first place?

  151. Interesting piece….John??

    http://tinyurl.com/yj8c3uo

  152. Hey, ho, Leslie. Another day, another theory. I’ll believe it when I hear it. :)

  153. I hope this story is accurate, but I must wonder how on earth the Express discovered that this gathering occurred at Birkhall and for what purpose the meeting was joined. Unless our own Dan was hiding beneath the piano (is there a piano at Birkhall?) I must wonder who could have known all that information and revealed it to a journalist?

  154. Exactly what I thought, Gigi!

Until there’s an official announcement, I will take these sort of things with a huge grain of salt.

  155. This story is so silly! It could only be Dan under the piano, coni as the butterfly on the wall… or Carole on the phone with the reporter

  156. While we are discussing information access and accuracy, how in the world did HELLO Magazine discover that Chelsy Davy gave Prince Harry a key to her 1.5 million pounds sterling home in Belgravia? More puzzling, how could HELLO know that Prince Harry recently messaged Chelsy that he can’t wait for their reunion in South Africa and that he misses her? By what means was such private information obtained and by whom? That assumes, of course, that all this information is, indeed, true.

  157. I assume they might have gotten the information the same way that the messages Charles sent to Camilla while still married to Diana got uncovered – except that these days it’s a lot harder to keep wireless transmissions secure.

Or perhaps like the supposed Brangelina split that got reported in the British newspapers this past weekend (even in the Times!) it’s false.

  158. *hic*
Under the piano, you say? Well that might have worked better. I certainly couldn’t see a thing from inside it.

  159. Dan,
Inside the piano indeed! Had someone decided to play some celebratory waltz for the newly engaged couple, you would have truly been hammered ;-) (sorry, too easy to let pass)

The only way that they found out about Harry is that the locksmith was bribed… with an invitation to one of Gigi’s Teas!

  160. LOL! So that is how they managed it! Splendid, I must say! My dear Dan, do let me know which of our Gala RA Teas the locksmith will be attending so that we may entertain him graciously and to a degree commensurate with the favor he offered you.

  161. “…or Carole on the phone with the reporter…” Sojourner, I think you are on to something here… If your daughter is being slandered as “work shy, waity Katie” would you not be tempted to have this kind of information leaked somehow?

    I wouldn’t dismiss the idea.

  162. Cristina,

I followed such suggestion with not one but three madly laughing smileys…
If Carole had done this, her daughter would know one thing about her future: PW would be nowhere the near of it.

Most likely, it was yet another episode in that long running show “As the tabs fabricate”

  163. Also…
    Gigi,
when I saw this, I thought of you…

    http://tinyurl.com/ykcknqr

  164. Thank you so much, sojourner!! I just watched all of them and enjoyed them immensely! :)

  165. I just saw a photograph of Princess Beatrice looking very stylish in a black coat dress ensemble. She was pictured with another celebrity who was wearing the same outfit, except in hot pink. I must say that Beatrice would have looked better without the chunky shoes and the black stockings which did not enhance her appearance at all and were not appropriately matched with her dress. The celebrity in the hot pink version of the outfit wore flesh-colored hosiery and dress heels–just right. Why do Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie appear so often wearing black stockings which appear to be incongruous with their dresses? If this is the current fashion, I confess I do not find it at all attractive.

  166. HELLO Magazine has pretty photographs of the one of the estates owned by the Duchy of Cornwall which was recently rented for 3,000 pounds sterling by Kate Middleton’s family for the holidays. Very interesting! In the same issue of HELLO, there are lovely photos of the Danish Royal Family, with a story that once again revives the rumors that Queen Margrethe may abdicate in favor of her son and Heir on her 70th birthday in April. That is also very interesting, especially if it turns out to be accurate.

  167. So there is absolutely no news, huh?…

  168. Prince Harry played in a polo match to raise funds for his charity, Sentebale and was thrown when his polo pony skidded–but his team won anyway and Prince Harry scored one of the six goals. Also, he promised he would dance on stage if a certain amount was raised. It was and he did! He also visited a children’s home and there are wonderful photos of him with the children. He is so like Princess Diana!

  169. I would like to know what you all think of this article about Kate Middleton and the “when” not “if” wedding plans.

Many thanks, and best wishes for a warm weekend!

  170. Pure speculation. Why would Indian papers get a hold of such stories before the British press? I will believe an engagement is official when CH announces it.

  171. Ireland is but warming up in Wales, but

For my home team (away from home)…

    WHO DAT!!!!

  172. Well my fellow “Doters” (kindly meant), I have a question.

I trust all of you, having followed Royal Anecdotes for a few years now, and seeing how you all converse on royal topics. My question is this: Who is trustworthy in the world of Royal Literature? I’m just looking for biographies and stories on the royal family and am not sure what biographers are trustworthy and which ones are out only for the dollars/pounds.

I love reading what you all say about stories that come out, sifting through fact and fiction. And I’ll continue to read for as long as royalanecdotes lives. :)

    My best to you all.
    Cheers

  173. My daughter and I flew to Washington DC Thursday to visit friends and relations and to attend the Pittsburgh-Penguins-Washington Capitals hockey game. Of course, we are still here due to the blizzard which dropped over two feet of snow on Washington DC and the Maryland-Virginia suburbs! Our Monday flight was cancelled but we have a flight out on Tuesday. I bought the William Shawcross official biography of the Queen Mother and thus far I am pleased with it. I detect no inaccuracies and the detail and photographs are excellent. I am not as yet half way through the tome and have just finished the chapters dealing with the Abdication of Edward VIII and the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. If we get back home tomorrow, I will be getting ready for the Winter Olympics in beautiful Vancouver! Of course I will be glued to the TV set, watching the events from the comfort of home. :)

  174. Meg, I agree that the William Shawcross book is the best Royal biography of 2009. It’s full of detail and well-rounded judgements, and also sympathetic to the Royal Family, unlike many others.

It’s a brick of a book though, but there should be a paperback edition by now.

  175. There is a paperback or even a kindle version available, John, but I bought mine to read on the plane and while I was in DC. Also, I collect books about the Royal Family, so I always purchase those books in hardback. The William Shawcross book is just shy of 1,100 pages and is a very thorough treatment of the life of one of the most fascinating women of the 20-21st centuries! :)

  176. I agree the William Shawcross biography was quite an epic read. It was so fascinating, I couldn’t stop reading… even so, it took me a good two months to get through. I too bought the hardcover edition, and found myself lugging it on a DC – NYC train not once, but twice! Shawcross gave a flattering portrayal of the Queen Mother, and I am as big a fan of hers now as ever.

Still, to be fair – and objective – I thought the book was slanted too far against Edward VII and the Duchess of Windsor. I understand why the Queen Mother may want to blame him for her husband’s early death, but it’s fairly cut and dry that it was his cancer from cigarette smoking, and not his brother’s renouncing his duty, that sadly killed George VI.

  177. Oops – I just noticed this now. I meant to refer to Edward VIII and not Edward VII in my previous post.

  178. I really liked the Tina Brown biography The Diana Chronicles. I bought it while stuck in an airport with a flight delay a couple of summers ago.

Meg, if you want a witty fun read, try that one. I have no idea what the “doters” think about it.

  179. Thanks for the suggestions! I would take a trip to my local bookstore, but I’m snowed in my apartment in DC. Perhaps I’ll have luck with amazon… or not. Bleh.

I hope you made it out, Gigi. There’s a mass exodus out of here in light of more snow coming. I’m considering a trip back home to Kansas just to get out of this!

I hope everyone is having a great week and your tea stays warm.

    Cheers.

  180. gigi – did you get out of DC? Hear another storm is headed there today. :(

  181. At last some real Royal news:

New post — Has Prince William made a bad career move?

  182. Coni–thanks for your concern! My daughter and I were lucky to get seats on the 10AM flight out of DC, which we heard was the last flight out because they are closing the airports again in anticipation of an additional 10-20 inches of new snow, due this evening, on top of the two feet of snow that still has not been cleared away in DC or the suburbs! We had a harrowing trip to the airport this morning at 7AM– roads clogged with snow and very icy roadway. We feel very fortunate to be back home in Texas, where, however, we have temps in the 30s which are going lower tonight and we expect a sleet storm. Mother Nature has truly gone ’round the bend this time. Her mental process baffles me! Why cannot the snow fall in Vancouver, where the Olympic Committee members are desperately praying for it, instead of in the Eastern Seaboard states, where there are no budgets nor services in place to cope with such accumulations of snow?!
