Prince William supports City appeal for soldiers

Clarence House has issued the following statement on the Princes’ support for a City of London-based charity event for service personnel.

Prince William and Prince Harry have become Joint Royal Patrons of the City Salute Appeal, launched today to celebrate and support this country’s armed forces and their families.

City Salute is a major open air event that will take place in the heart of the City of London. The drama will unfold in front of St Paul’s Cathedral, the iconic setting for so many historic events. The public will be asked to come and help raise money for injured servicemen and women.

Funds raised will go to the City Salute Appeal, which will support Headley Court, the tri-service Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. Projects funded will be a swimming pool and sports complex for physiotherapy and family accommodation for relatives of servicemen and women undergoing treatment.

It is not clear whether this includes the “party for millionaires” reported on recently, but it seems likely, especially if that is the Princes’ own contribution to the main event.

Prince William commented, “As brothers, we are delighted to be supporting the City of London in saluting all those who serve their country. As well as raising money for vital rehabilitation facilities, City Salute is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the fantastic contribution made by our servicemen and women and their families. It is also a chance to pay tribute to the casualty evacuation and medical staff of all three Services who protect and care for the wounded so brilliantly and with such tireless dedication.”

City Salute will be “a celebration and spectacle that combines traditional elements and state-of-the-art son et lumière projections”, with St Paul’s Cathedral providing the backdrop. The event programme will probably include :

* Band of HM Royal Marines marching through Temple Bar
* Ceremonial troops and armoured vehicles of The Household Cavalry
* RAF fly past
* Son et lumière – St Paul’s Cathedral
* Giant screens showing specially commissioned short films about the lives of the forces and their families.

It sounds like a splendid occasion and those who are able to go should definitely be there.

Individuals can donate from today to the City Salute Appeal at www.citysalute.org.

  1. John your headline on this thread perfectily illustrates what I was trying to say in the last thread. Why didn’t you simply headline THE PRINCES instead of Prince William supports. This is a joint effort by both and I hope they raise alot of money I wish I knew where to send a small donation. Please don’t make Harry an after thought.

  2. This is splendid! I am absolutely delighted about this and I am so proud of Prince Harry and Prince William for spearheading this tribute and fundraising effort for the troops! John, could you post where a donation can be sent from across the pond?

  3. Trudie, William is the future King, so becomes the story in many cases, just as Kate always scoops Chelsy. One mention of William or Kate brings in tons of traffic, that’s why the media puts them up first.

It’s both realism and economics, nothing to do with putting down Harry, who had terrific press over Afghanistan.

  4. Gigi, I’ll track down the donation address and post it here, if I can.

  5. Thank you, John. For anyone reading the articles on this wonderful site, I just want to “preach to the choir” for a moment. This is an example of how incredibly valuable and uplifting the influence of the Royal Family is in Great Britain, and, indeed, the world. The two golden Princes, England’s hope, step forward at the exact right time with the exact right message and mission to bring aid and comfort to injured veterans of military service! No government official could lead such a cause without criticism, no statesman however hallowed could be the patron of this worthy effort without being beset by naysayers. I am very very proud of our Royal Princes and terribly touched that they are making this their own crusade. Advance Britannia! God bless all who are willing to share the mission.

  7. Thank you John! :)

  8. yes, john – thanks for the city salute info. lets keep good vibes going on this site…not that we cant have own opinions..however…..

  9. The Independent Online from South Africa is speculating about a possible engagement between Harry and Chelsy. Harry was supposedly seen having a “serious conversation” with Chelsy’s parents at some hotel in Cape Town, SA. Though nobody overheard the conversation the papaer draws the conclusion that an engagement might be in the cards. What do you think?

  10. Sorry to change the topic but I thought you would like to know that there is a report in todays Daily Telegraph of PW having a pint of cider and a pub meal at a pub near Lincoln accompanied by the red arrows pilots. It also gives the date he will graduate from RAF Flight School as Tuesday April 11th. I assume that that is the day when he officially gets his ‘Wings’.
His window of opportunity opens then, when does he join up with the Royal Navy John?

  11. Just think of the possibility of having BOTH Princes announce their engagements in close proximity! Two Royal weddings!! The prospect makes me dizzy! The RA champagne will flow like the Thames at high flood!!!! :)

  12. Isana, Harry and Chelsy were reported to be unofficially engaged last year, but then they supposedly split up. Who knows what he’s been up to in South Africa, but he obviously likes it down there.

  13. Royalist, I believe William’s RN engagement starts after his summer break, but it could be sooner, I suppose. Maybe he’ll go back to the Blues and Royals for a spell.

Gigi, just keep the champers flowing whatever happens. :)

  14. John, it might be a good idea for you to start work on your loyalty toasts for the two RA Gala Engagements Teas and the two RA Gala Royal Wedding Teas–four toasts is a lot to compose on short notice!! My dear Arthur, please don’t take any sudden or lengthy trips, as I will need you and John to pour the champagne and of course our dear Trudie to pour the tea. Let us all be prepared for whatever happy events Fate has in store for us!

  15. I am sorry but I can’t keep pace with all these possibilities come on William and Harry take the plunge.

  16. Royalist, do try, at all costs. I realize the calendars will be crowded, but we mustn’t miss a minute of the magic! :)

  17. If things are happening as they appear to be, it will be great news for the royal family. Actually, one could see a triple engagement coming William-Kate, Harry-Chelsy, and Zara-Mike. Next Christmas could be interesting with lots of new faces at the royal celebrations. My question is would Harry announce an engagement before William? How close to
a royal wedding (Autumn and Peter) could an engagement be announced? Has anyone heard anything about Kate since she has been back from her ski vacation? There will be a lot of celebrating ahead.

  18. Gigi, as an incurrable romantic and very much a royalist there is very little chance of me missing any royal/engagement announcement. I have got my champagne on chill but wouldn’t mind a cup of Trudie’s tea!
PS I took the date of PW’s graduation of 11th April from the Daily Telegraph but I got the wrong day-the 11th April is Friday not Tuesday as i said – appologies.
