Baby Wessex leaves hospital
First pictures of Baby Wessex are now coming in.

Prince Edward, Sophie and Viscount Severn leave hospital
The couple will now travel back to Bagshot where young Wessex will be introduced to his family home.
All three looked very well.

What could be better than a precious new baby, just in time for Christmas. I’m so glad that mother and baby are doing well and came through the delivery without complications.
Now we eagerly await the baby’s name…

My guess is the the new little Viscount Severn will be named Philip Edward Christian George.

Thanks for this new thread, John.
I was looking at the Royal Family’s official website, and I’m confused about surnames. As I understand it, the official last name of the Queen’s descendants is Mountbatten-Windsor. But Edward’s daughter is listed as “The Lady Louise Windsor.” Is the “M-W” name only for the Queen’s children? Does that not extend to grandchildren? Thanks in advance to anyone who can clear up this detail. (I’m assuming Viscount Severn will have the same last name as his sister.)

Evelyn, some decades ago Prince Philip wanted the Queen to rename the family Mountbatten-Windsor. The Queen refused causing a temporary rift with Philip who went off round the world in HMS Britannia.
However, Edward, who will inherit Philip’s title and patronages when he goes, decided to use the name for his own family and descendants.

aww the baby is so adorable!
I’m thinking they’ll name him Phillip Edward William George. That way they get Prince Phillip(grandfather), Prince Edward(Father), Prince William(cousin and future King of England), and King George(great-grandfather).

Thanks, John. I didn’t know about the Queen’s disagreement with Philip’s request. Does that mean that Edward uses Mountbatten-Windsor, but only Windsor is officially recognized? That would explain why the official RF website lists Louise as “The Lady Louise Windsor.” Seems strange that they wouldn’t put “The Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor” if that is indeed the name her parents prefer.
Samantha, I think one of the names will be Christopher, which is Sophie’s father’s name.

I’m not sure of the actual status of that, Evelyn. I think maybe only the children will bear the name. The website may have made an error with that.

Concerning the baby’s first names my guess is that he will be called Philip (after his paternal grandfather) Edward (after his father) Christopher (after his maternal grandfather) David (Sophie’s brother’s name and also a name favoured by the Royal Family). Mountbatten-Windsor came about because after she ascended the throne the Queen decreed that grandchildren of younger sons of the sovereign who do no bear the style Royal Highness should be named Mountbatten-Windsor. However, when Princess Anne married Capt Mark Phillips she chose to record her surname as Mountbatten-Windsor and henceforth all the Queen’s children have used this when they married. Lady Louise Windsor was registered as Mountbatten-Windsor but only uses the Windsor part of her surname. To confuse matters further the children of Prince Edward are entitled to use the style Royal Highness, however, Edward and Sophie decided that as they didn’t want their children to play a large part in public life they would be styled as children of an Earl hence. Princess Louise of Wessex is known as Lady Louise Windsor and her brother is Viscount Severn. When Prince Edward becomes Duke of Edinburgh, upon the demise of both Prince Philip and the Queen, the baby Wessex will probably be known as Earlof Wessex, which will then become Prince Edward’s secondary title

If I remember reading correctly HM decreed that her descendants not carrying the HRH or those who marry will be known as Mountbatten-Windsor when HM published the letters patent in I believe 1960 but Anne used the name Mountbatten-Windsor when she signed her marriage certificate in 1973. Merry Christmas Every one!!!!!!!!!!!

The British Monarchy website has an official announcement that the baby’s name will be James Alexander Philip Theo.

Evelyn, this explanation is lengthy and I hope not too confusing.
Under Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917, the Queen’s children and grandchildren in the male line (children of Princes Charles, Andrew and Edward) are styled with HRH Prince or HRH Princess and carry the surname Windsor.
In 1960, an Order-in-Council was issued stating that the decendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who are not styled with Royal titles, will use the personal surname Mountbattan-Windsor. Use of the Mountbattan-Windsor surname was to begin with the Queen’s great grandchildren in the male line. Prince Edward, however, has decided to style his children without Royal titles so you may see Lady Louise and James Viscount Severn identified as Mountbattan-Windsor.
I think it is important to note that Prince Edward’s decision to style his children as children of an Earl is an informal decision. No official Letters Patent was issued to effect this change; consequently, Prince Edward’s children are, legally, HRH Princess Louise and HRH Prince James regardless of how Edward and Sophie wish to style them. This might explain why the Royal Family website identifies Lady Louise with the surname Windsor, since she is a grandchild of the Queen in the male line and therefore, a Windsor by law. Some of the Queen’s children, the Duke of York and the Princess Royal, signed their marriage certificates using the surname Mountbattan-Windsor, but this was done as a sign of respect to their father, Prince Philip.
It’s also interesting to note that the 1960 Order-in-Council mentioned above was issued for two reasons: first, to appease Prince Philip for not changing the name of the Royal house from Windsor to Mountbattan, as John previously noted, and second, to distinguish the Queen’s and Prince Philip’s extended family from the families of the Duke of Gloucester and Duke of Kent who also use Windsor as a surname, e.g. Lord Frederick Windsor.

Merry Christmas Trudie. I must have been writing my lenghty post while you were submitting yours. I swear I wasn’t copying!

Thanks so much, everyone, for your helpful comments on the surname situation. It certainly is wonderful to have such a knowledgeable group with whom to discuss such matters. A blessed Christmas to you all!

Arthur Great minds think alike Merry Christmas to you too!!!!

Thank you, Aunt Pierre! James Alexander Philip Theo sounds like a splendid name! John was right, the name Philip is among those chosen for Viscount Severn! I am assuming the baby will be called James, but I suppose we shall see what transpires.
