Yet another television documentary on the last days of Diana, Princess of Wales, is due to screen on ITV tomorrow. Diana’s Last Summer has a similar theme to the recent Channel 4 film which examined the role of the paparazzi in the car accident that killed Diana, Dodi Fayed and Henri Paul, the driver.
In the film, former News of the World editor Phil Hall says, “I felt huge responsibility for what happened and I think everyone in the media did. It’s difficult because we knew the full story, we knew that Diana was helping newspapers and yeah, the driver was drunk. But my view is that if the paparazzi hadn’t been following her the car wouldn’t have been speeding and, you know, the accident may never have happened.”
The documentary tells what ITV calls, “the definitive story of Diana’s love-hate relationship with the photographers who followed her every move”.
It screens new interviews and pictures from the paparazzi who followed her before the crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel as well as her former security chief, Ken Wharfe.
Patrick Jephson, Diana’s former aide, comments, “The Paris paparazzi were a well-known phenomenon. They were a kind of circus. They would chase the Royal motorcade on motorcycles. They had pillion passengers carrying heavy television cameras. It all contributed to the sense of being inside a Wild West stagecoach while bandits were attacking it.”
No accident in history has been so scrutinized, pored over and retold as much as this one has. Let’s hope the 10th anniversary in ten days, and the Inquest in October will finally lay the matter to rest.

There are strongly positive noises coming from Clarence House on the love(ish) match between Prince William and Kate Middleton — the girl who won’t go away.
A Clarence House insider said: “Kate being given a pass to Clarence House is a very clear and practical step towards putting her relationship with Prince William on a more official footing. It’s a logistical way of bringing her into the fold. Things are a lot more imminent than you understand. Plans for William and Kate have been ring-fenced.”
“Ring-fenced” is certainly a step up from “pencilled-in”, the last phrase we heard from Palace sources on this matter. Since then, the couple have gone through a series of ups and downs, ons and offs and general confusion.
The words, “Things are a lot more imminent than you understand.” strongly suggests an announcement of their engagement very soon, perhaps as soon as they have returned from the Seychelles.
I can’t remember such openness from senior Palace sources before. We must now expect a third engagement among the Queen’s grandchildren in short order. And there’s also Zara waiting in the wings until after the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
It looks like wedding cake is going to feature on every Royal menu for the next year.

The Sunday Mirror is reporting that Prince Harry has asked long-term girlfriend Chelsy Davy to marry him, and, apparently, she has said yes.
The Prince is said to have popped the question on a recent safari holiday in Botswana. “However, they do not intend to become officially engaged until Chelsy finishes her post-graduate course in politics at Leeds University and Harry has served the Army overseas.”
Chelsy, 21, is currently recuperating after an emergency appendix operation at home in Cape Town. She is said to be planning to spend weekends with Harry at Highgrove in Gloucestershire when she moves to Leeds next month.
A friend said, “[Harry] has come to realize that what he and Chelsy have is pretty special.”
However, the couple have decided to keep a low profile with Chelsy out of the public eye as much as possible. She will not be attending Princess Diana’s memorial service at the end of August.
So, an engagement at last in the Royal Family. How far behind will Willam be, I wonder?

What brink, you may well ask? Kate Middleton’s life has become one brink after another. She has so many brinks to her credit she could give the Himalayas a run for their money.

Kate Middleton shopping in London
After a lonely summer of retreats and failures, described by one newspaper as “a summer of love”, Kate Middleton is now on exclusive Desroches Island in the Seychelles with Prince William all to herself for a week. We understand the entire resort has been booked for the couple.
True to form, they travelled separately to the island.
The Sun reports a friend saying, “William was desperate to spend some quality time alone with Kate. The island is perfect as it is so private. Normally it is full of honeymooning couples. But for them, the entire resort has been booked.â€
Royal Anecdotes has held the line against the naysayers for months, although Kate’s recent mood coupled with reports that the Queen was against the match, seemed to indicate a parting of the ways.
It’s still all speculation, of course, and there is no doubt the first fine, careless rapture has faded in the relationship. But William is now mature enough to realize it always does. He seems to miss Kate whenever they are apart so has he come to a decision that this is a better basis for a marriage than the excitement of a wild fling?
There again, this most unpredictable of couples could confound us all one more time.
