New book claims Diana was pregnant

In a new book, Diana, The Inquiry They Never Published Chris Lafaille, a former Paris Match journalist, is claiming that Diana was “nine to 10 weeks pregnant at the time she died”.

The author says that “The document dated August 31 1997 was sent to the then Minister of the Interior Jean-Pierre Chevenement [and others]. … It has never been claimed or proved to be a fake.”

Several questions are raised by this assertion :

1. Diana stayed with her closest friend Rosa Monckton just days before she holidayed with the Fayeds and her death in Paris. Rosa provided incontrovertible proof that Diana was not pregnant then. I won’t quote her words as they were very personal, but they are on the record.

2. The French Judge Herve Stephan would have seen this document in his four-year investigation, which stated that she was not pregnant. Lord Stevens’s three-year investigation also came to the same conclusion.

3. Who is funding this journalist? Who wrote the document and has the journalist been given access to it. Or is it just more planted hearsay like so many of the so called “facts” of this case?

We know that as soon as Diana’s bodyguard regained consciousness, Ritz people were coaching him in what to say.

This case is now a toxic pond of confusion, designed to leave everything up in the air so no verdict can ever be reached.

Update : A spokeman for Paris Public Hospitals has said that the letter is a forgery which was first circulated just after Diana’s death.

“Examination of this document has established with absolute certainty that it is a fake,” he said. “Many of the medics who treated Diana remain at the hospital, and all deny the claims contained in this forged letter.”

  1. Everybody knows that this is not true. I find it very interesting that people are trying to make up stories about The Princess of Wales during the tenth anniversary of her passing. This is the year that we remember her as a loving wife, mother and friend. This is what William & Harry has tried to make very clear. I have read that Germaine Greer think Diana was a “devious moron.” I know that Dodi’s father Mohamed Al-Fayed really wanted Dodi to marry the Princess and have children with her but we all know that was just a fling to make Hasnat khan jealous. all of these stories are crap. I know people must find something crazy to write about her, just like people must find something crazy to write about Kate. I really would like to see someone write about Diana’s happy years of marriage, the happy years that she spent with her family and friends. There were happy years but somehow all of this was tarnished with the reasons of the divorce, her lover stories, also with her “difficult” personality. I guest that people don’t think that would sell. How sad!!!!

  2. Ive seen what I was fearing about, the British newspapers that relate this like a sensational thing. How can you trust something described with these words: shocking, sensational, explosive, and etc, ofcourse then it appears like a nth person who wants to make money. That is not the goal. John, as an author, you must know that when you want to write a book, you cant object to your editor. It’s like a producer, so wants to make the most success of your book. And naturally, ofcourse, it’s not a suprise that he has chosen a date which coincide with the events to come.
Lafaille is not a simple journalist from a tabloid or something, he has been a redactor of several newspapers and magazines, he is serious and doesnt work on celebs’s lifes. He doesnt need publicity, he has worked very well on an affair called l’Affaire Borel (a French judge killed at Djibouti). He is just the author of the book, as 50 people has worked on the inquest, he just was the informations leader during 10 years.
“Who wrote the document?”. John, this is the Hopitaux de Paris, not a doctor, it comes from the AP- HP, thats official, it cant lie Im afraid. There are official date stamps on it. He also talks about the car, which was stolen 3 months before the crash, but ofcourse everybody focuses on the pregnancy. Even Martine Monteil was aware, and she cant lie. “Who has the journalist been given acces to it?” The document is in the dossier John, but amazingly, the British never wanted to talk about it. And they never will. It would bring a mess in the country. Come on , Lafaille is not saying that she was killed because of a complot or something. He would never sully his reputation, and Paris Match would never ever sully its reputation if nothing wasnt true. They would never say that some people from the government were aware if it wasnt true, it would be libel and it could end to judiciary pursuits. “Who is funding this journalist?” Paris Match, who is one of the most powerful press in France and is linked to the government. It is serious John, it’s not rumors from someone who wants to make money. Im bored by the British people’s behavior. They still write and reports rubbish about this poor woman everywhere, but dont want to accept that someone else can write about the inquest. And then they say let her in peace while they still read and buy papers about her. Has Lafaille written about Diana’s “manipulative, devious” side? No, it’s just about the inquest. It’s lovely Claudius, and the sky is blue and everybody is nice with each other with rainbows. “I really would like to see someone write about Diana’s happy years of marriage” Oh really? Then I wish you good luck for finding even just 10 minutes of happiness during her marriage.
Well anyway, time to go on holiday. Bye bye everybody!

  3. Well, Lily, I don’t claim to know the truth of all this, but unless Rosa Monckton is lying about it, the book must be wrong.

  4. People can lie, official documents with date stamps on it don’t lie. It’s very possible that Monckton doesnt know anything about it and wanted to protect her friend’s memory and reputation. If I was one of Diana’s close and devoted friends, I would NEVER pretend that she was pregnant, even if it was true. The Etablishment would banish me, and people would believe that Im in the Al Fayed’s theory. I think Monckton was right to say what she said.
A whole book where 50 people have worked on it during 10 years is not going to be wrong just because of one of Diana’s friend has told the very personnal thing that you have mentionned during an interview.
I dont claim to know the truth of all this, to be honest I dont care at all, but it would be nice if the British people and newspapers would stop to be cautious and suspicious everytime a French well insider says something about the inquest. It’s very hypocritical. The accident, unfortunately, has happened here. The French dont publish bad articles about Diana’s “crazy” temperament all the time here. The French dont care at all if she was manipulative or vain or something. So stop thinking Lafaille’s goal is money. I dont see what it is entertaining or fascinating to read 300 pages of details about an accident.
    ;-)

  5. Lily, I’ve just updated the post. The hospital is saying that the document is a proved forgery circulated just after her death. Many of the original doctors are still at the hospital and all say it’s a laughable forgery.

And who had the letter forged?

  6. Yep thats it ;-)
4 people from the Governement have seen it, like this harsh Martine Monteil, and they never said that it was a fake, but now suddenly a spokesman from “Paris Public Hospital” remembers that it was a fake :-)
Well if it was in the habit of the AP-HP to make this kind of announcement then I dont want to be cared in French hospitals anymore! :-)
Is this the same who claimed that the Fiat’s owner was an English farmer who was just having a promenade in a Paris tunnel after midnight???
Allright time to go now, bye John!

  7. Please, British people! I beg you, stop thinking that the French staff who was working on Diana and on her accident are nuts! Where the hell someone is going to make false documents with date stamps on them and then put them in the police dossier can you see? Only in police movies! You even cant respect her memory yourself so stop blaming others! Please! Ofcourse they cant say it was true, otherwise we would have diplomatic problems between our 2 lovely countries and it would be so bad!!! (it would not be the first time though!).
    :-)

  8. Have a great holiday, Lily. And if you’re taking some books with you, don’t believe all you read in them. :-)

  9. Then you, but I dont read book about the royals, John. I have better to do than that.
The problem with Diana, it’s that she has become a cheap supermarket icon, an heroin for housewiwes, so, of course, everything that could come in Lafaille’s sense is seen as ridiculous.

  10. Thank you, not then you, sorry
    well im in late now

  11. a hero, not an heroin!

  12. I’m currently reading Tina Brown’s book, The Diana Chronicles. I would recommend it. It’s much more sympathetic to Diana than the excerpts in the press suggested. ;-)

  13. The thing I find so curious is that Monsieur Lafaille waited until the tenth anniversary of Princess Diana’s death to publish his book. Either he did not have the information he claims to have until recently, which makes the veracity of the information all the more doubtful, or he chose to wait until the tenth anniversary for reasons of his own, which suggests that money and sensationalism are his objectives.

I find it difficult to believe that Princess Diana was pregnant at the time of her death. But if she was, it would strengthen the possibility that a senior member of the Royal Family conspired to have her and her unborn child killed to uphold the ‘honor’ of the monarchy. There isn’t much honor in the monarchy to uphold where Charles is concerned and the entire hergang is a dubious situation at best, but there you are.

  14. Gigi, the Paris doctors were not expecting Princess Diana at the hospital at that time of night. We should accept what they say about what they found. There was no time to concoct a conspiricy.

In any case, how could so many people have been involved? Surely someone would have whistleblown the story by now.

As for the other conspiracy theory, it’s so far-fetched and impossible to implement given the unpredictability of Dodi’s orders and Henri Paul’s driving, it could only happen in “Spooks” (MI5, in America). ;-)

  15. Dear Lilyfromfrance,

There were happy times in the marriage but as I said before it was all tarnished by all kinds of stories. I remember reading several years ago that someone said that Charles didn’t love Diana and that’s not true at all. Charles may have helped mess up the marriage but he did love her. They became good friends towards the end of Diana’s life and when she died, not only did he lose a former wife and mother to his children but he lost a friend. This whole pregnant business is not true. But I have to admit, towards the end of Diana’s life will always be subject of many crazy stories because simply no one really knows what was going on in her life at the time.

  16. I don’t believe one can blame Mohamad Al Fayed for this rumor. If it is true, and that’s a BIG “if,” the father of this unborn child would not be Dodi! Diana was not dating Dodi ten weeks before she died; therefore, someone else would have fathered the child. Dr. Hasnet Kahn, perhaps?

  17. Does anyone know if the Diana memorial service will air in America on next Friday? If so what channel?

  18. As far as i know, we will probably never know the truth.

  19. Very likely, Marilyn. I would like to know if the Memorial Service will be televised in the USA also. John?

  20. If Diana were Pregnant then I can understand why Pigs fly!!!

  21. LOL Trudie, you are hilarious! :)

  22. Yes it will be televised, all the websites say so but they don’t say if it will show here in America.

  23. Diana’s automobile accident is like the JFK assasination.

In JFK’s case, no could be believe that a pathetic loser like Oswald just killed the most charismatic man of the time. There had to me more to it, a conspiracy, something.

Same with Diana. How could such a beautiful, beloved, famous woman die in drunk-driving accident? There had to be more to it, a conspiracy, something.

Sadly, life is filled with random events that have no meaning, except that assigned by the spectators, who wish to make sense of the senseless.

  24. I disagree with your theory, Alicia.

  25. In the ten years since her death if Diana were truly pregnant do you honestly believe CH would not have leaked that story? They have done more damage to her reputation that for them and to push Camilla futher they wouldn’t hesitate to put a story like that forward.

  26. I wonder what became of the woman dodi was engaged to at the time he took up with Diana?

  27. [...] at Royal Anecdotes discusses the book that claims Diana was pregnant when she [...]

  28. Exactly correct, Trudie! Thank you for posting that! Kit, I didn’t remember that Dodi al Fayed was engaged to someone. Who was she, do you recall?

  29. Gigi, Dodi was engaged to Kelly Fisher, an American. He kept her out of the way while he was courting Diana, then, on the orders of his father, he dumped her.

No-one mentions this side of Dodi, or his addiction to cocaine. I’m sure Diana was savvy enough not to have tied herself to him. Her taunting behaviour with him, though, left a lot to be desired from the mother of a future King.

  30. Alicia, got it in one. Her devotees want to believe it was a great apocalypse worthy of a heroine, not some grubby car accident set in motion by a drunk driver and chaotic orders from a man addicted to cocaine.

Diana deserved better, surely, but she also made some of the decisions. Unhappily for the drama queens who want a firework display, wild, undisciplined behaviour always ends in meaningless chaos.

  31. Actually her name was Kelly Fisher John. I also watched here in the USA theGreta VanStustern ON the record entitled Diana’s last days and during her investigation it was corraborated that Yes Dodi called his father and Mohammad advised them to stay at the hotel and Dodi agreed. It was Henri Paul who persuaded Dodi and Diana to leave with him as the chauffer not his regular who was used as a decoy. So I’ll wait for the inquest for the real truth to come out. Gigi did you see it?

  32. Thanks for the correction, Trudie.

An ITV documentary last week claimed that it was a befuddled Dodi who made the decision to go to another restaurant at midnight, then on to his own place.

The version on the U.S. show sounds a bit defensive to me. I don’t think Henri Paul would have the clout to persuade them not to stay at the hotel that night, which was the obvious solution. They could have had dinner in their suite and avoided the paparazzi and much else besides.

  33. I wonder why Dodi dumped Kelly so suddenly. They were engaged. And why would a grown man let his father decide who he dumped and who he didn’t?

Why was Al Fayed so insistent that Dodi and Diana were going to marry when he knew Dodi was engaged to someone else?

Has Kelly Fisher ever been interviewed about this?

  34. John, how did Dodi keep Kelly out of the way? Did she know about the Diana romance? Was she kept in a separate country?

  35. I missed it, Trudie. :( What did you think of it overall? Was it balanced?

  36. Kit, Kelly was kept on another boat, it was reported at the time. When the news broke, she gave a tearful TV interview with her mother. A depressing incident all round.

  37. The BBC will broadcast the Memorial Service from 10.00 am GMT (6.00 am ET) on Friday August 31. It should be available on the BBC website, if not in other countries :

    Link to BBC website.

  38. Thanks, John. :)

  39. Here is an article from the Times regarding Diana’s later years and how she might have turned out had she lived:

    LINK

    Kat

  40. Kat, can you make long links text links, as above? In some older browsers long links break the sidebar. Thanks.

  41. Gigi Sorry you missed it. It was balanced from witnesses who were in the tunnell at the very moment of the crash and a couple from NY even stated that not one person lifted a finger to help Diana and the medical services also took their time attending to the dead first and then turning their attention to Diana and Treavor. Even the Doctor traveling through the tunnell that night and saw the crash and stopped made the assessment that Diana was gravely injured and made the emergency call and that response was slow.

  42. To be honest I know the whole thing was orchestrated, think about it, Diana herself had said they were trying to kill her in a car accident – isnt that a coincidence?. The french, MI6 and the royals are all in it together. She had a huge bump showing through her swimming costume in the last few days – she was a healthy slim woman, unless she was bloated like a pregnant woman then she was pregnant. James hewitt and hasnat were both targetted by the MI6 and told to stay away from her. It had nothing to do with them but hasnat continued to see her for years until death threats were made against his family in pakistan (It was in the pakistan papers). If I was rosa monkton i would probably tell the truth even if my life was in danger – if i was a true freind, but I can see why she lied, most people would have. Diana was very keen to marry the heart surgeon hasnat, her energy healer freind told us that but rosa says she wasnt ready to marry. Personally i dont trust Rosa there is something about her.
Finally the drivers blood level showed carbon monoxide at a very high level – at that level he should find it extremely difficult to walk yet we saw him walking out the builiding with no problem whatsoever. When Diana was found concious it took the french police 2 hours to get her to a hospital they ‘approved’ of, there was one within a 3 mile radius of the accident. Only God knows what they did to her!. Not only that once the accident had occured they FRENCH POLICE quickly cleaned the tunnel they actually sprayed it with something, a cover up perhaps?. Such an important person had an accident and they clean up the tunnel a few hours later? When she did rach the hospital the french police and the ‘chosen’ hospital staff decided no to let anyone in, not even Mr Al-fayed who was in Paris, hmmm good plan, ensuring no-one will ever find out what happend. Witness near the tunnel spoke ofa big bang and a crashing noise and a very bright light. Not paparazzi camera flash but much more severe. Please do think for yourself.
They can stop her closest freinds telling the truth by death threats and can even pay people to lie about the incident but they cant stop us all and they certaintly cant take away our intelligence.

  43. “Kit, Kelly was kept on another boat, it was reported at the time. When the news broke, she gave a tearful TV interview with her mother. A depressing incident all round.”

No kidding… that is what I heard too… i heard dodi’s fiancee was incarcerated on a yacht… To be honest, I found it too far-fetched to believe. Apparently she was planning to sue dodi for breach of contract at the time of his death.

  44. Thanks so much, Trudie. I wish I had seen it, even though the truth of that ghastly night is still so painful after ten years of obfuscating by the authorities.

Kit, did you ever hear if there was any legal proceeding initiated by this young lady after Dodi’s death? Did she attempt to get some sort of cash settlement from Mohammed al Fayed?

  45. Jo, conspiracy theories are great fun for some, but when you look at all the evidence, you realize most of this stuff is either wrong or has been planted.

Diana had Scotland Yard protection on the Med, but she refused it for Paris because Mohamed al Fayed told her he had the best protection around. It turned out to be two men who have said they were so stretched they couldn’t do their job properly.

Everyone who has looked at this case has concluded that if she had taken the police protection to Paris, she wouldn’t have died.

  46. Sebastien, I believe “Lily” is away in the Canary Islands for a while. If you want to interrogate her in this way — and she agrees — please feel free to to use us as an intermediary.

    Best wishes,

    John

  47. “Kit, did you ever hear if there was any legal proceeding initiated by this young lady after Dodi’s death? Did she attempt to get some sort of cash settlement from Mohammed al Fayed?”

I don’t know whether she took any action, Gigi. i imagine not, as he died so suddenly afterward. Terribly sad for her – a double tragedy – but she barely gets a mention.

  48. Oh.
A website claims that my comments “worth following”???

    You have “analyzed” my words?
I dont know if I must be scared or flattered.

Well… why not? It can be fun afterall. Do you have a name and a number? We could talk with telephone, it would be more “normal” :-)
Can you give the details to the devoted intermediary please? :-)

  49. I have been following your blog, I hope you do not mind a late comment – I am a South African and our media carried huge front-page headlines about the current inquest into Diana’s death. What I want to know is: how can anything scurrilous – even if it is found on the part of assassins/MI6, etc – ever be exposed without very seriously incriminating the Royal family? It seems to me to be unthinkable that any inquest – no matter how formal – could ever dare to point an accusing finger at, say, Prince Philip or the staff of the royal family. That would lead to a REAL, MASSIVE insurrection against the monarchy. So who can be satisfied by this procedure, other than the public wanting closure?
We in SA have followed the 10-year debate about conspiracy with some scepticism: key figures like Trevor Rees-Jones have been shunted aside. Mohamed el-Fayed is hardly a credible individual, given his rants and paranoia. So what authority can finally – if ever – put the lid on this tragedy?
Finally, one thought: if anyone in the royal family (or its advisers) seriously wanted Diana out the way, would it have been necessary to actually kill her? She was not exactly Mata Hari: all it would have taken would have been kind words, flattery and the promise of her title – from a distance. Surely no-one could have seriously thought her capable of representing a true threat to the crown!!! And if she had indeed gone on to marry Dodi Al-Fayed, what could she conceivably had done to her former in-laws, besides become an “unmentionable” subject? It seems to me to be the height of paranoia to imagine that Diana warranted an elaborate assassination. She was a simple, loving soul, filled with insecurities and self-doubt, and- let’s face it – no great intellect. She would have wanted nothing but access to her sons at reasonable times, enough money to live well – and very little else.

  50. Gwen, I agree with you, the whole conspiracy thing is the fabrication of wonky minds. :)
