Chelsy Davy — African model

I’ve no idea how true this report in the Daily Star is, but it claims that Chelsy Davy — Prince Harry’s girlfriend — has dropped out of her proposed postgraduate degree at Bristol University and intends to become a fashion model.

A friend of Chelsy is quoted as saying, “Chelsy is in talks to become the face of Upper Deck clothing, a new Kenyan company looking to launch in the UK. The clothes are made using raw African materials and Chelsy likes the idea of promoting an African clothing brand in the UK. But, like Kate Middleton, she’s decided a career in design is something she might actually prefer to modelling in the long run.”

To me it’s always slightly depressing when an intelligent girl turns away from higher education to become a model or “something in the fashion industry”.

Let’s hope it’s not true. If it is, why not do both? It can’t be a fulltime career posing in safari suits — can it?

And whatever happened to the tale that Kate Middleton was going to work for Tom Ford in New York? Mysterious.

  1. I don’t see that story in the online version of the Daily Star, John, and I agree the decision, if true, seems ill-advised. Nevertheless, there is far more limelight in modeling than there is in studying for an advanced degree. I must assume that it is the limelight that she is seeking.

  2. Finally! Someone can see it! Thanks Gigi! :-)

  3. Well I dont want to sound like a hater, maybe I should explain. I liked Chelsy in the past, despite the fact that I dont know her personnally. Harry was all smiles when she was with him and that was the most important. But since the Rundle Cup last year, there is something in her that is fake to me. And I wasnt wrong, she is posing for photographers. The height was during their holidays in Caribbean islands. I couldnt believe it. When I see some videos, she is always moving her head everywhere, seeking where are the cameras. And I begin to be tired when she use the press to make complains when Harry is seen with other girls. Why doing that? Kate never do that. With the risk to be called jealous or something, I never believed this thing that she would be very intelligent. Studies are not everything. Thats an invention from the press in order to make comparisions between with Kate. Chelsy seemed to be a genuine person to me at the begining. Now I know it has all gone. Gigi, I saw these rumors last Saturday, in the Telegraph. I think the Daily Star is using the same source. They say that she always wanted to be a model.

  4. Alright, the boys’ oats are sowed. It’s time to stop hanging around with these commoner girls and find some wife material with class.

  5. Is there anyone else who thinks this presumed logic of Chelsy’s is a little skewered? If she really wants the glare of publicity, where could she find more exposure than as the girlfriend and later on the wife of Prince Harry? There are many models in the world, and they come and go and very few reach star status. Furthermore, the laws of nature decree that the shelf life of a model is short. It isn’t an easy life of glamour, either. You spend your work hours being a living mannikin, have to stringently watch your weight and compete with many others under the glare of hot lights. This can hardly be about money since she presumably will inherit half of her father’s considerable fortune. What is she thinking?

  6. Ill advised, that is for sure. I see no reason why she couldn’t do both - go to university AND model. It is always preferable that a woman does everything she can to ensure she is self-supporting - never mind that she is already very wealthy - fortunes can change in a big hurry but one thing one can never take away from you is your education.

Some women just never learn that.

  7. Maybe Chelsy wants to help promote an African clothing brand to help the economy in Africa. I don’t really see her easily giving up on her education.

  8. It is nice if she wants to work, if everything is tasteful that is fine. Harry hasn’t proposed and might never, so she should work and live her life, she might be going into the business side of the business also. That is why I always liked Chelsy, she lives HER life, she is young and educated, I think she’ll make fine decisions, she carried herself well at the concert, I was impressed by her, after reading the negative things the press has said in the past, I was suprised at how pretty and well mannered she was. I like her.
On the fashion note: There are reports that Jigsaw the company Kate works for might be having financial trouble.

  9. Well it would be great to talk about Chelsy without making references to Kate. There is any comparisons to make. But the funny thing is that they aren’t very different. Posing for an advert is not a work. What’s that thing that she is living her life? She is only 22! Whats living a life? Working? And? She is always in holidays, like Kate, she will not make something from her studies. People were blaming Kate because she accepted a car but people applaud Chelsy because she accepts a “job” thanks her status. Im sorry but she wont be a model like what we know about this job. The job will consist to wear the clothes in public. Like actresses and so called starlets do. Is that impressive? Is that a job? I was waiting for the moment when she will finally make a decision after Uni. I always knew that it will be disappointing. But ofcourse thats not my businness and she does what she wants. Here is, the girl supposed to be brilliant, wanting to work for the “fashion industry”. An other little girl who is trapped in the fascination for the limelight. It’s really sad. It’s really too bad.

  10. I see what you mean, Lily, but any girls who date Prince William and Prince Harry are going to be compared by the public and the media. The Royal brothers share, to a certain extent, the same circle of limelight. I wish people could be more tolerant of these young people, all four of them. They are quite young to be navigating the media glare and Kate and Chelsy have no Palace or Clarence House PR professionals to assist them in this daunting jungle atmosphere.

  11. But we don’t even know if the stories are true just because it was written does not mean she is even considering it. She took a world tour after her Graduation from University as a gift from her parents, I see nothing wrong with that, it is what a lot of Wealthy upper class students do if they have the means and “choose to” after graduation. But if Chelsy is still just hanging around Harry two YEARS from now with NO JOB LIKE KATE DID WITH WILLIAM for just Under TWO YEARS……then people will condem Chelsy too, but let’s see IF she takes a job or goes to University to continue her graduate studies . If she hangs out and Parties like Kate did for TWO Years then she will get bashed too…..
Kate is currently on vacation again, when does she work, not a full week, it appears?
(Miss Middleton, 25, is holidaying with friends in the Caribbean but she is said to be “hopeful” of making it back in time. (For Camilla’s party- the Daily Mail July 17, 2007)
Kate’s still hardly working, we will see what Chelsy does once she plants her feet in the UK, but I doubt the UK Press will say how Wonderful it is when or IF she just shows up at nightclubs for almost two years with no job, the way they did with Kate.
“Yes” they will always be compared, but the press will always play “up” what Kate does as “superb” and what Chelsy does as lacking, the press doesn’t like Chelsy, it has been obvious from day one. Kate has had panty shots in the press, been falling out of limos looking drunk, been out with other guys, took two years to find a job and all the press does is tell us what wonderful Princess material she is. Give Chelsy a chance to make her own mistakes or prove herself either way.Time will tell us everything we need to know, not the press.

  12. Mandy does it even matter? William gets good press and Harry always gets the bad press, so it any wonder the same goes for their respective girlfriends.

  13. Exactly, this is true.

  14. Relax Mandy :-)
You seemed to be proud of her, saying that she was living her life, and now you write that we dont even know if that story is true. Well, if a “friend of her” says something, then why it couldnt be true? Actually she even already have the job. The last time that I’ve read an article about her, she was going out from a night club with a friend, and the article talked about the mark (Upper something) and the price of her dress, with 2 photos, and last week she has been enjoyed an entire article about how she doesnt care about the cost of her clothes. Strange idea that suddenly her clothes seem to be so important. I agree with you that she should be given a chance to prove something, like everybody, thats why I found ridiculous that thing “she is living her life”. She is only 22. You still dont know who you really are at 22. Im disappointed about her and Kate’s choices for their future thats all. Im wondering how you can study politics and suddenly want to work for the fashion industry. Thats just the impact of the limelight. It’s cheap, that after 1 year thinking about whats next, she chosen fashion. Its really too bad. Because it reflects what almost all the girls in the world want to be. You see, what she does or not have no impact on me. I really dont care about it. I must disagree about the bad press though. She is always described as stunning and the nice editors always publish the photos where she is kindly posing. You can find photos where you can see her buttocks, in an airport though. More grave than a panty shot! ;-) Kate is not so loved by the press. They are not very harsch with her because she has more chances to enter in the family than Chelsy.

  15. I agree, Lily. If Chelsy had been French she would be reading Jean-Paul Sartre and hanging out in jazz clubs on the Left Bank while doing a higher degree at the Sorbonne.

Her ambition would be to take up where Segolene left off and win the Presidency back from Sarko. :-)

  16. Who knows. Look Jackie Kennedy. She was French actually. And despite her high social ambitions and her great sense of fashion she studied at the Sorbonne and was very bright :-) :-)

  17. Yup. She certainly led the fashionistas back in the 50s/60s. I think Diana modelled herself a bit on Jacquie.

But we don’t yet know what Chelsy is going to do. She’s on holiday with Harry right now, so will miss Camilla’s birthday bash on Saturday. Harry is waiting for a decision on what the Army is going to do with him. If he stays in Britain in a ceremonial role, Chelsy may well decide to go to Bristol after all.

  18. Oh, I dont want to have ennemies, Jackie had a part of Irish origins too ofcourse! (remember that there are 2 or 3 Irish people here) Hihihi!

  19. There are on holidays? Im going on holidays too on saturday. I hope no one is going to get engaged/married or dead during my absence :-)

  20. Lily, I’ll guess you’re going somewhere between Menton and Marseille. :-)

  21. John, you’re the strongest link! I go in a town called Saint Raphael, exactly between Menton and Marseille :-)
And in August it will be Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. What about you John, are you going on holiday this summer?

  22. Lily, I live on what’s called the English Riviera. We’ll be pottering around the resorts here.

The thought of flying during July/August puts me right off, I’m afraid.

  23. :-) I remember I visited a town called Torquay when I was 18. It was great. Lucky you! I dont have that chance to live near the sea. :-(

  24. Torquay is a good place, but there are much better ones — Salcombe and some of the Cornish resorts, for example. But the whole area is great for sailing and fishing. The only problem is that summer was in april and seems to have deserted us. :-(

  25. Jacqueline Kennedy was bright and she did, indeed, study at the Sorbonne. She came home from France after graduation, got an entry level job as an inquiring girl photographer for a newspaper and then very shortly after that she married a very wealthy man from a powerful Irish Catholic family who was a U.S. Senator, John Kennedy. Jacqueline was also from a wealthy family (her Mother had married well twice) so she never felt the need to have a career until after her second husband, Onassis died, when she went to work for a publisher. Jacqueline’s most significant career was as First Lady of the United States.

So Lily and John are deserting us to go on holiday? Have a wonderful time! We shall hope for a full report when you both return from your various holiday locations.

  26. I’m not going yet, Gigi, probably end August/early September.

  27. Oh good, John, because I just have a feeling that something quite newsworthy and even exciting may happen in August! :)

  28. What an optimist you are, Gigi. :-)

  29. Have that feeling too Gigi. Something for the end of August. But don’t know why. :-)

  30. And dont know what.

  31. AHA! Our sweet Lily and I are in mind meld. :) This bodes very well for a late August event! :) I am an optimist, John, I happily admit it. My philsophy is that bad things will happen when they happen but it is healthier to expect the best. I always love August anyway, despite the dreadful heat we have here, because my parents’ wedding anniversary and my Mother’s birthday fall in that month. Good omens!

  32. Thanks Lily for thinking of me! but i don’t know if the Irish are that attached to Black Jack we are much more attached to the Kennedys, i still mourn poor old John John, never mind his father. Tell me, i have wondered about Caroline’s children, any potential players for the Democracts? I know they are young but they are teenagers now i think? You never hear about them, Caroline does a great job allowing them be normal. Saw a picture of Rose once she is pretty.

  33. The Observer reported a full week eariler that she is not going to Bristol and it’s usually a very accurate paper.

  34. You wouldn’t have any connection with the Observer/Guardian group, would you, Chelsy-friend? :-)

  35. For my part, Im quite ignorant about them, Eliza. This is a question for Gigi! :-)

  36. Yeah, i did think Gigi was my best bet when i posed the question. Enjoy your holiday

  37. Eliza, Caroline Kennedy and her husband Edwin Schlossberg are very good at shielding their three children from the glare of publicity. Rose Kennedy Schlossbery is 19, Tatiana Celia Kennedy Schlossberg is 17 and John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg is 14, so all three are still in various stages of their educations. Rose is a student at Harvard University and will graduate in 2010. Caroline is the survivor of her family and undoubtedly bears the emotional scars of the deaths of her Father and Uncle. I personally doubt if Caroline wishes her children to enter the political arena, if only because her family paid a terrible price for their political careers. Nevertheless, children often embrace interests despite their parents’ fears. It remains to be seen what career paths these three children choose. It pleased me that Caroline and Ed Schlossberg chose commemorative names for their children. Rose is named for her maternal Grandmother, Tatiana is named for Ed’s Grandmother and a close family friend, and John is named for JFK and for Jacqueline’s maiden name, Bouvier.

  38. Thank you, Gigi, I knew you would know. I understand that Caroline would be loath to have them in political front line so to speak but she was reared on giving back to society and in her own quiet way has contributed with her books and with the awards etc.
I know it is heartbreaking to be the last of the family as her brother said at the time their mother died ‘there was three of them for so long’, three against the world and then he died. I can’t imagine how she felt, i just am glad that her husband seems a lovely man and they are happy.
I know Diana’s death was horrendous and i was as upset as anyone but his death, for me, was worse, while there was just so much potential for both of them, there was the hope that he could carry on where his father and Bobby left off. (I know Teddy has done alot in the legistature)
So the romantic in me half hopes and half dreads that they will carry on the Kennedy mantel.

  39. You are welcome, Eliza. I meant to say that Rose Kennedy Schlossberg is named for her Great Grandmother, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. What hurt me the most about John, Jr.’s death was that his Mother, Jacqueline, had tried so hard to protect John from the dangers of the adventuresome, risk-taking, careless side of his personality, the part of John that worried her most. Then, not long after she died, John slipped back into his risk-taking ways and it caused his premature death. I mourned Diana’s death and still do, more deeply, because her tragic demise left two children without a mother, and because the bright and healing light of her love, compassion and ability to help the least among us was extinguished too soon.

  40. Reading your words, Gigi, it seems almost as if you are describing a monarchy, except that one Royal house has temporarily replaced another : a bit like the Houses of York and Lancaster — now thankfully united — in our Wars of the Roses. You seem to have replaced our King George III with George the Forty-third.

Interesting that John Kennedy Jnr’s magazine was called “George”. ;-)

  41. John, that George was George Washington.
Gigi, I knew who you meant when you said grandmother about Rose but i hope this Rose is a nicer person than her name sake and has a happier life

  42. Joseph P. Kennedy created the idea and the actuality of the Kennedy Dynasty, John, and the American media hyped it. You still read articles about trying to resurrect it, although I am not sure this upcoming generation of Kennedy offspring will step into the arena. I was not a supporter nor an admirer of JFK, nor of RFK, as politicians or persons. The only Kennedy I admired was Eunice Kennedy Shriver, JFK’s sister, a remarkable, compassionate and selfless lady of great gifts. She somehow escaped the tragic flaws of unchecked opportunism and unbridled ambition that eventually felled the Kennedy men.

Eliza is correct, John. The “George” for whom JFK, Jr. named his magazine is George Washington, of beloved memory, the first President of the United States and called the “Father of his country.” Of him it was said that he was “first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

  43. Quote: Lily…”They are not very harsch with her because she has more chances to enter in the family than Chelsy.”

So you say, but….too bad William dumped her and has not been around Kate since the Concert. I think Kate is so overrated by the eager press. The press has just chosen to promote mediocre plain Kate, but people are not fooled. At the end of the day she is still just a girlfriend, as is Chelsy.
(Except Kate may now just be ex-girlfriend)
He could have made her official fiancee by now, instead he dumped her. She is now a sometime girlfriend, not even on a serious level, people are not fooled by her synchophant Fairy tale fake lovestory press.
