Kate Middleton spends night at Clarence House

Kate Middleton spent the night before the Concert for Diana with Prince William at Clarence House. Arriving at midnight, her car was collected from a hotel carpark by an aide.

However, at the concert, she sat two rows behind William, while Chelsy Davy was in the front row next to Prince Harry, conspicuously kissing and cuddling.

It seems that the Wills / Kate romance is definitely on again, but that the couple want to play it down to avoid press attention.

This is confirmed by a quote from a “senior Royal source” who said: “They are of course close friends and have remained so since April. But they both want space and do not want to conduct their friendship with the added attention and pressure of more speculation. They particularly did not want their friendship to be the focus of media attention. Yesterday was about Diana and celebrating her life and work.”

The media, of course, loves a cloak and dagger romance — Prince Charles famously hid in the boot of his car when visiting Camilla at Raymill House.

Somehow I think they’re going to get more attention rather than less.

  1. Here’s what I think: the media and some people are making too much of this. If they are really together, then answer this question: why didn’t she sit in the same row as William? Why were they seperated by 2 rows, to such an extent that they could not have communicated, and if a photo was taken of William, she could not feature? Why aren’t they photographed together? The one photo on the Sun was taken when he walks away from her literally with his back towards her, and she looks quite angrily at the camera. This is all just speculation and is to be expected, because the royal romance did sell papers. And why would they pretend to have broken up? William stated in the interview with NBC’s Lauer that he doesn’t listen to the media and his decisions are his alone. I think the break-up was real and nothing to due with media pressure. Similarly, their not appearing together and sitting apart might have nothing to do with the media and perception, maybe it really is that simple.
I think they are still close friends and it was courtesy to invite her and her folks. But the way in which they were placed whilst Chelsy sat next to Harry was a huge contrast. I really don’t believe the tabloids- weren’t they the same “sources” who swore we would’ve had an engagement by now? Who are these “sources close to the couple/prince”?

  2. Rubbish Harry and Chelsy were together and it did not detract from the concert despite speculation about Harry’s behavior in Canada but William did have a good time dancing with Guy Pelly why was that.?

  3. Trudie, what speculation about Harry’s behaviour in Canada?

  4. I think that Prince William and Kate Middleton both wanted to avoid taking the attention away from the Concert for Diana, which was the true focus of everything.
Kate Middleton generates an unusual amount of press, and I’m sure both William and Kate were mindful of this fact when the seating was decided upon. I don’t think it was a coincidence that Kate was seated just out of camera range. I think it was done on purpose, so that photos could be taken of both princes without getting Kate Middleton in the shots. I even read an article that said that William and Kate supposedly met a couple of times behind the scenes (during the concert) just to speak to one another. It could have been pure fallacy, but at this point anything is possible. There have been many reports of them being together and interacting with each other. Either they are very, very good friends indeed, or they are slowly rekindling their relationship, or the tabloids have a hugely overactive imagination! Either way, I thought the concert was brilliant and all of the performers did a great job. Prince William and Prince Harry were successful with something that was actually a massive undertaking. Good for them, I think they would have made their mother extremely proud and pleased. I know I’m proud of them, I think they did a bang-up job!

  5. Cleo, why not? Why all that would be the press’ imagination only? Don’t you think odd that as his ex, Kate spends a night at his home? I admit that I was a little suspect too, in the beginning, but now, since yesterday, it is clear to me that they date again. Despite she was not near him, and despite that they obviously avoided the publicity and the photographers, I had the feeling that Wills made that hidden announcement, that girl is my girl. They just don’t want to re-live the same thing again. The frenzy and the pressure from the public and from the press.

  6. I thought Kate’s position at the concert was perfect- given the speculation their are-they-or-aren’t-they status generates it makes sense that she would sit far away enough from Will that she wouldn’t be in most photos of him. The day was supposed to be about Diana and they didn’t want to take away from that by creating (more) of a media frenzy about the whole thing.

  7. Cleo I agree. Kate was sitting back there in the area another ex girlfriend Jecca and another of William’s ex’s was sittind. It was nice that she was invited even though they have broken up, just as it was nice Jecca was invited. I think her parents and Kate were invited before the breakup and that’s all there is to it and they are good friends now, that’s all there is to it. I think the press has been pushing Kate for ages and still no ring, no proposal, no engagement, now she was sitting behind him at Concert, not even next to him as Chelsy was with Pr. Harry. Now the press is writing her up as a one night girl, like it’s a good thing for her, it’s NOT, it looks quite tacky and desperate.

  8. Mandy either it’s tacky and desperate, or just possibly Prince William and Kate Middleton are actually continuing to see one another, albeit out of the public eye. I think it’s quite possible that although the break up itself was very real, they have managed to patch up some of their differences and they are attempting to quietly continue with some sort of relationship or friendship behind the scenes, so to speak. I suppose time will definitely tell.

  9. There were reports overnight from a “senior Royal source” that they are definitely back on. Also, Harry is reported as thinking William is mad to go back to her. Something is going on here, and probably never really stopped.

  10. Kate couldn’t sit with William in the front row without announcing that they were back on and that would have taken from the concert. It would have been different if they had never broken up, then she could have sat there without any speculation beyound what they normally face.
Why is Harry so anti Kate? ok she is totally different to Chelsy and probably more serious but is that any reason to tell the world that he dislikes her. Can he not be loyal to William, of course give his view to william face to face but i don’t like him slagging her off to his friends who then tell the press.
It is unfair and silly because if they do get married it will just put a strain on his relationship with his brother.

  11. Maybe because she is too scary for him, Eliza :-) Maybe he knows that this is a serious relationship, despite the several splits, he is just annoyed by a girl who is stealing his one and only beloved brother, and would have the same title as his mother had. Just a little jealousy that all brothers and sisters, (and mothers towards their daugther in law, mostly) know :-)

  12. You’re right, Lily. Kate and Chelsy are very different in temperament. It wouldn’t be natural if one brother didn’t have a different opinion of the other’s girlfriend. Finding someone who is “good enough” for an heir to the Throne is an impossible task, as we’ve seen, so better let him make his own mind up.

Also, it wouldn’t be natural for Harry not to comment on Kate after he’s drunk the menu at Mahiki’s. I hear, though, that he gets on well enough with her.

  13. Yep John, and it would be so hypocrical from Harry to call Kate The Limpet again, as Chelsy seems to be worse. We just have seen Wills playing with other girls recently, while Harry… well, since always :-) I use to find it cute, at the begining, when Chelsy used the press to make warnings to her lovely young boyfriend. Now I find it ridiculous. These 2 are in the same country less than 10 times a year, he is a playboy and enjoys his superstar status, so if she is so bored about his behavior as she claims to be, then let him alone, Chelsy, and dont use the press anymore, we have seen in the past before, and it ended up tragically.

  14. Hypocritical, sorry. :-)
    Well it’s the morning.

  15. No worries, Lily. I commit typos at all hours of the day and night! :) I fear John has given up on me and has now resigned himself to my typo-marred posts.

  16. Gigi, your typos are almost nonexistent compared to some stuff I see on the internet. Lily has a good excuse, of course. ;-)

  17. ;-)

  18. Kate with…All these “supposed” reunions but still NO Ring, still NO proposal, Still no move into protection by the Palace as Sophie had, when it was serious for Pr. Edward. If Kate was really getting ready for a marriage or engagement to William, the Palace would have totally protected her, instead of letting her hang out there, getting questionable photos of her undergraments by the press, as a girl who would be potentially future Queen, the Palace would have totally protected this girl, already. I don’t believe the reunion stories and as far as Palace sources, the Palace would show by their actions where Kate stood by protecting her, NOT letting her be written up as a one night stand here and there when William wants her. I don’t think he will ever marry Kate, just like I’ve always felt. It’s more press wanting to make this mediocre woman into something she will never be…rumours persist that the Queen feels William can do so much better than Kate and doesn’t approve of her for William’s future Queen, which might be one of the several reasons why Kate has been relegated to one nighters with him here and there.

  19. :) Thanks, John. :) How tolerant you are! Mandy makes an interesting point about the absence of security officers for Kate Middleton. One reason I can think of that Kate may be delaying this is that once you access that protection, you at the same time forfeit, in this case forever, the last vestiges of your life as a private citizen. Or, as Mandy theorizes, Prince William and Kate have, indeed, called it a day and are merely friends.I hope it is the former, but it may well be the latter. Of course, the Queen is the person who probably authorizes the personal protection officers, and they, of course, are expensive. Perhaps the Queen wishes to wait until the appropriate time, in view of the Palace schedule. This is one of those times when it would be nice to know a true clairvoyant.

  20. If Kate would benefit protection, then it would be a clear announcement that these 2 are back together, and this time for good and for more serious. And it’s not what they want for the moment. A part of their break up was because of the frenzy and the pressures from the press, so I doubt that Wills would ask a protection for Kate, while they are maybe hiding a new relationship. The more something gets official, the more Wills chickens out. I really can’t see a protection for Kate, not until a potential engagenement.

  21. There was a time when Kate was given protection. It was around her birthday. Do you remember when 10 police officers escorted her from a nightclub? That was when an engagement seemed inevitable. ;-)

  22. I have to agree with Mandy on this one….

  23. Read the latest post, Ziny.

  24. John Kate was never given protection, that was another myth the press told, she simply called the police when the press got too intrusive and the police in her area showed up.

  25. Mandy, you think 10 police officers to escort you out of a nightclub is not police protection?
