The Coronation of Elizabeth II

Back in 1953, when Britain was still under the rule of austerity after the war, the most sumptuous event in a century was staged in central London. It was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Before the Crowning

It was also notable as the first Coronation ever to be televised. The BBC, under Head of Outside Broadcasts, Peter Dimmock, strove mightily to bring this extraordinary ceremony to a television audience watching on tiny monochrome sets all around the country. That it succeeded at all was a minor miracle, as Dimmock concedes.

Here are a few reminders of what people saw that day :

Back to the Palace

I suppose we’ll see another Coronation in London within the next decade or two. I wonder if it will match the 1953 occasion with its momentous sense of new beginning and expectation?

  1. THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE IT. IT FOCUSED THE NATION ON THE GOOD SIDE OF IT’S SOCIETY. PRIDE AND LOVE OF MONARCHY AND NATIONHOOD WERE IT’S REAL THEME. THAT IS WHY EVERYTHING WILL BE DONE TO MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN AT LEAST ON THE SAME SCALE. MONEY AND CHANGING TIMES WILL BE THE EXCUSE. THE REAL STORY IS THE LEFT CAN NOT STAND LOVE OF MONARCHY AND NATION. IT SHOWS THEM UP FOR WHO THEY ARE. ALAS, THE PRINCE OF WALES IS ONE OF THEIR USEFUL IDIOTS.

  2. John I highly doubt the next coronation will match Elizabeth’s with a momentous sense of new beginning and expection. After all the coronation will be Charles and every one pretty much knows what to expect dithering and whineing.

  3. I believe Charles will not be the next king. Im sure of this since his marriage with Camilla. The Queen is crazy about devotion and duty. And she hasn’t sacrificed the happiness of her own sister for nothing. I’m sure she made a kind of pact with Charles like you want to marry Camillia then you let the job to William. Charles is so selfish that Im sure he accepted. The Queen’s job is a job for life and her doctors can keep her alive for 25 years. Charles will make excuses as he is too old or something. He is already too old :-) The Queen will never abdicate. Except if Philip dies, well Im not sure she would keep her job without him. I don’t know. As for the new beginning when the Queen will die, I think it is correct. It will be then end of something, and also a new start. More modern.

  4. HIS marriage sorry :-)
    Mornings are hard for me.
