Prince William to be Duke of Cambridge

According to a report in the UK’s People Sunday newspaper, Prince William will be made Duke of Cambridge on his marriage.

If this information is true it shows that the Palace is quietly making preparations for a wedding between the Prince and Kate Middleton, who will become Duchess of Cambridge. The earlier May/June wedding “pencilled-in” story is now looking decidedly feasible.

The last Royal Duke of Cambridge died in 1904 after causing a stir by marrying an actress — a big deal in those days. Prince Edward was suggested for the Dukedom on his marriage, but it was decided to give him the lesser title of Earl of Wessex while he waits to inherit his father’s title of Duke of Edinburgh.

The People goes on : “The decision shows the Queen now believes it’s only a matter of time before the couple — who have been dating for five years [sic] — get married. We told last month how Wills was being urged to propose to Kate, 24, within months. And a highly-placed source said: ‘Kate is being quietly groomed for her new role. The Queen thinks she’s a natural and a perfect consort for William. The Dukedom will be an interim title for Wills while he waits to inherit his father’s title of Prince of Wales when Charles becomes King.”

Last week’s announcement that William will become Ranger of Windsor is another indication that the Royal Family is steadily putting his future domestic arrangements in place.

  1. Whatever… won’t believe a bunch of tabloids untill an OFFICIAL engagement is in place.

  2. Sounds like William has no say about his future lets hope history does not repeat itself i.e. Charles and Diana.

  3. William is known to be stubborn, Trudie. My guess is that he’s right on top of all this.

  4. Duke of Cambridge is already taken by Harry!!! I heard Will is taking Duke of Cornwall.

  5. Prince Charles and Camilla are the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.

  6. But I remember that it said somewhere that Harry has already taken the Duke of Cambridge.

Also Charles is not the Duke of Cornwall, he is the prince of wales. It is only Camilla that is Duchess of Cornwall. I heard that when Charles and Camilla step up then it will be Wills being duke of cornwall.

  7. Lucy, Charles is POW, Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothsay. Camilla could not be Duchess if he had not got that title.

  8. Okay, I didn’t know they can have more than one title. But I did read somewhere that Harry has already reserved Duke of Cambridge.

  9. No, too academic for him, Lucy. Duke of Clarence, maybe ;-)

The Duchy of Cornwall is never separated from the Prince of Wales because it provides his entire income of around £17 million a year.

  10. John, you call yourself a royal knower of all,

Maybe you don’t remember, but Harry was said to be getting the exact same title a while ago. William will not recieve his titles until he become POW, and in turn, Charles will become king. It hasn’t even been discussed. Harry is the only person, who upon marriage will recieve a title. Why would they give PW a title, when he will become POW?

    But thats the press’ fault.

  11. ^ Hey don’t be too mean to John. But you are right with the Harry thing, that is the article I remember. Damn Press…confusing us all!

  12. If William marries before his father becomes King, he will get a Royal Dukedom. Duke of Cambridge seems to have been settled on. If he remained as Prince William, Kate would become Princess William on their marriage. That’s just not on.

  13. The article says that Prince Edward was given the title Earl of Wessex while he waits to get the title Duke of Edinburgh from “his grandfather.” The current Duke of Edinburgh is Prince Edward’s father, not grandfather. Also, either Clarence or Cambridge would be suitable Royal Dukedoms for Prince Harry, as both have been held before by sons or grandsons of reigning monarchs. I agree with John that if either Prince William or Prince Harry marries prior to the Queen’s death and Charles’ ascension to the throne, he will be given a title, as that has always been done in my memory and I am nearly 60 years of age.

  14. Yes, you’re right Gigi, Philip is his father. My mistake.
