Queen Camilla Looks the Part

She looks every inch the Queen of all she surveys. Sitting on a silver throne beside her husband, the future King, who can doubt that, barring bolts from the blue, the Duchess of Cornwall will one day be Queen Camilla?

Camilla and Prince Charles were guests of honour yesterday at the annual Rajasthan Day parade in India’s rosy-coloured city of Jaipur. As she watched a procession of jewelled elephants, painted camels and dancers, the Duchess looked absolutely delighted.

The couple will fly home tonight with Charles heading off almost immediately for a short skiing holiday with friends in the Swiss resort of Klosters. Camilla is not a skier so will spend the time with her daughter, Laura.

Charles will, however, return for his and Camilla’s first wedding anniversary a week on Sunday. The couple will celebrate the occasion at Birkhall, their Highland home, where the Prince proposed to her.

Did Prince Charles Romance Streisand?

A new biography of Barbra Streisand strongly suggests that Prince Charles was “besotted” with the singer and Hollywood actress back in 1994/95. She reciprocated, and later remarked, “If I had not been so nervous of meeting him, I might have beaten Diana to the altar.”

The unauthorized biography by Christopher Anderson, Barbra – The Way She Is, has been attracting a lot of coverage in the New York press. It cites a number of well-placed sources for the story.

The late Harold Brooks-Baker, once editor of Burke’s Peerage, is quoted as saying, “The official explanation was that Prince Charles and Barbra Streisand had a private tea. Well, Charles has a ‘private tea’ with quite a long procession of women over the years. From what I understand, he was absolutely besotted with Barbra Streisand. Did anyone ever turn Charles down? Not to my knowledge.”

The book says: “According to a former member of the household staff [at Highgrove], Prince Charles had gone to elaborate lengths to keep Fleet Street and, more important, his then mistress Camilla Parker Bowles from finding out. ‘The Prince and Miss Streisand were very affectionate toward each other,’ the staff member said. ‘I entered the room at one point and obviously interrupted them … they were quite flustered’.

Princess Diana’s friend, Lady Elsa Bowker, is also quoted saying: “Diana knew Charles was infatuated with Miss Streisand. She would not have been surprised if they had an affair.”

At the time of the alleged affair, 1994, Prince Charles had separated from Diana two years earlier and was said to be involved with Camilla Parker Bowles, now his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Prince Charles Saves the Day

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were among the foothills of the Himalayas yesterday on their tour of India and the Middle East.

Visiting a holy shrine of the Sikhs where Sikhism was born as a blend of Hinduism and Islam, Camilla looked cool and elegant in a head scarf. Charles, however, exhibited his fondness for silly hats by wearing a Tommy Cooper-like wrap-around fez (pictured).

Later though, Prince Charles saved the day and Camilla’s dignity by his quick thinking. The Daily Mail reports:

In a scene that could have come from the film Carry on up the Khyber, an official unwittingly pulled her chair away just as she was about to sit down after signing a visitors book at a pharmaceutical research centre in Mohali.

She was about to land unceremoniously on her bottom when Charles spotted the impending disaster and caught her.

Despite his effective diplomacy in the Middle East in recent days, history tells us that incidents like these are what will be remembered by posterity. Although King Alfred saved England and the language, it’s the burnt cakes most people recall. Plus ca change …

New Film of Prince Harry

Office Cadet Harry Wales

Clarence House has commissioned a film of aspects of Prince Harry’s tough army training at Sandhurst. They plan to release the film following 21-year-old Harry’s graduation next month.

It’s said that a camera crew has recently filmed him making a beach landing in Cyprus, where he’s currently stationed. The video shows the Prince storming a beach on the island, in the midst of a firefight and mock explosions.

The UK News Of The World newspaper quotes a source: “It was just like the opening to ‘Saving Private Ryan’. And Harry did very well. No flinching, no stupid heroics. Very professional.”

Prince Harry and 200 other army cadets are being battle-hardened in Cyprus in an exercise called “Spring Victory”, the final stage of his course before graduating as a British officer.

In a strange twist revealing Royal acceptance, Kate Middleton, Prince William’s girlfriend, has been invited to the passing out parade, while Harry’s girl, Chelsy Davy, has not.
