The Duchess on Balmoral

Duke and Duchess of Windsor

The Duchess of Windsor (formerly the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson), was only reluctantly accepted into the Royal family. Writing in her autobiography, The Heart Has its Reasons, she highlighted the awkwardness of her relationship with the Royal round:

“My contribution to the traditional grandeur of Balmoral was the introduction of the three-decker sandwich as a late supper item, after the movies. This proved so popular that it created a minor crisis in the kitchen through the heavy demand for repeat orders. I am sure that this innovation, so patently mine, hardly endeared the new reign to the household staff.”

  1. Go on, write a comment. You know you want to :-)

  2. Oh, all right…

  3. The late Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Warfield Simpson) and HRH The Duke of Windsor were apparently “star-crossed lovers” reminding one of Romeo and Juliet. I understand the concern of Parliament, or actually the Prime Minister, on the decision they made due to the times then; however, what is so different about the marriage between HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall? Due to the unwritten constitution in England, legislation would have also had to be changed to prevent the Duchess of Windsor from becoming Queen of England. Is this not so? I am somewhat empathetic toward The Windsors. HM Edward VIII married the woman he loved and was forced to abdicate the throne. The Prince Charles married, finally, the woman he loved and now she may become Queen of England. Rather ironic, is it not?

  4. Thanks, James. Yes, it is ironic, but times do change. I believe Camilla will become Queen, maybe not at first, but by the time the Coronation comes, it will be a done deal, and no-one will object ~ at least, no-one significant.
